On Wednesday, Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faced off in the Eliminator of IPL 2024 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

After being put in to bat, RCB got off to a quick start but lost both their openers before the tenth over. Trent Boult got rid of captain Faf du Plessis before Yuzvendra Chahal accounted for Virat Kohli. Cameron Green and Rajat Patidar led a mini-recovery before R Ashwin's double strike left them on shaky ground at 97/4.

In the 15th over of the innings, RR struck a crucial blow as Rajat Patidar was caught by Riyan Parag off the bowling of Avesh Khan, leaving RCB at 122/5. Off the very next ball, the pacer struck new batter Dinesh Karthik on the pads. He was given out on field, but the decision was overturned on review.

However, the third umpire may have erred in this case. Karthik was adjudged not out after the UltraEdge showed a spike when the ball was close to the bat, indicating an inside edge. However, the ball appeared to still be in front of the bat, i.e. not touching it when this happened.

On the broadcast, the umpire did not consider that the spike on UltraEdge may have come from Karthik's bat making contact with his pad at the same instant, meaning he may not have hit the ball. Replays show the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps, meaning the batter was quite possibly incorrectly given not out.

In the end, the decision did not prove overly costly for RR, as Karthik was dismissed in the 19th over for 11 off 13 balls.
