The Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had to be abandoned with 19.2 overs bowled in the first innings after heavy rains prevented play from resuming at the Ekana Sports City in Lucknow.
LSG had posted 125/7, courtesy of brilliant innings from Ayush Badoni (59* off 33) who stood tall after his team were trembling at 44/5 midway through the innings. Their top order had a bad day at the office with Manan Vohra (10 off 11) and Kyle Mayers (14 off 17) all departing cheaply.
Karn Sharma was promoted up the order as an experiment but it fell on its face as he went for just nine from 16 deliveries. Krunal Pandya, the stand-in captain replacing the injured KL Rahul, fell for a golden duck while Marcus Stoinis and Nicolas Pooran also failed to produce the goods.

For CSK, Moeen Ali, Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana picked up two wickets each while Ravindra Jadeja scalped one.
Due to their disciplined bowling performance, it seemed that LSG might not even cross the 100-mark but Badoni took matters into his own hands and did the needful to post a respectable total on the board.
He smashed Theekshana for 15 in the 17th over and then meted out the same treatment to Deepak Chahar as well, scoring 20 runs off him in the penultimate over to bring up a well-deserved 50.
However, rain interrupted play soon which ultimately forced the match to be called off. The two teams were awarded a point each.
What happens if there is a 'no result' finish in the IPL?
If the team batting second cannot face five overs after the additional hour then the game will be a "no result".
In the group stage, this will mean each team involved in the game takes a point each.
Should rain hit a playoff game then the situation gets a little more complicated. During the 2022 season, playoff matches did not have reserve days. Tournament guidelines stated that a Super Over could be used to settle the game if conditions permitted. If not, the team finishing highest in the group stage would progress.
In the event, those contingencies were not necessary as all playoff matches were completed in full.
The IPL's 2023 Match Playing Conditions state “there may be reserve days (on which an incomplete playoff match shall be completed). Further details of reserve day arrangements will be confirmed when the 2023 match schedule is announced”.
An update to that is still pending.
