South Africa started their World Cup campaign in stunning fashion by defeating Sri Lanka by 102 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.

The fixture saw a number of records being broken as a total of 754 runs were scored cumulatively by the two teams, which is in itself a record.

Batting first, the Proteas posted a massive total of 428 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 50 overs. It was the highest run ever scored by a team in an innings of an ODI World Cup. They surpassed Australia's previous high total of 417 runs.

Three South African players contributed to the team's mammoth total with centuries. It started with Quinton de Kock who scored 100 off 84 balls. Rassie van der Dussen scored 108 off 110 balls but it was Markram, whose, hundred stood out as he hit his century off just 49 balls.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad captain eventually got out for 106 off 54 balls.

In response, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 326. They lost their openers cheaply as Pathum Nissanka went for a duck whereas, Kusal Perera was bowled by Marco Jansen for seven.

Kushal Mendis played a fine innings of 76 off 42  balls that included eight sixes and four boundaries. However, he was removed by Kagiso Rabada which stifled Lanka's run chase.

Charith Asalanka showed some resistance as he scored 79 off 65 balls but his effort was too little to make any difference. After his departure, Sri Lanka fell like a pack of cards to lose their first match of the World Cup.
