'He will rule cricket in the coming years' - Brian Lara heaps praise on Shubman Gill image

Former West Indies batsman and one of the greatest cricketing figures of all time, Brian Lara, has marked India opener Shubman Gill to have a great career moving forward.

The legendary cricketer was full of praise for Gill, who has become India's all-format opener and has broken several records in his young international career so far.

Talking to Anandabazar Patrika, Lara believed the swashbuckling Indian opener will go on to break his personal records in cricket.

What did Brian Lara say about Shubman Gill?

Lara, who holds the record for the highest individual score in a Test innings (400 runs), believes that the Punjab right-hander can break this record.

Gill, who has scored 966 runs in 18 matches at an average 32.20 with two centuries, hasn't been as impressive in red-ball cricket as he has been in white-ball cricket.

Shubman Gill can break both my records. Gill is the most talented batter in this new generation. He will rule cricket in the coming years. I believe he will go on to break many big records. He can do it. If Gill plays county cricket then he can break my 501*. In Test cricket, he can surely go past 400.

Lara also predicted that Gill will win a lot of major ICC titles with India. Last month, he ended up on the losing side in the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup against Australia, his second loss in an ICC tournament final in five months.

Shubman will score big, mark my words. Gill didn't score a century (in the World Cup) but look at the knocks he has already played. He has centuries in all formats, has smashed a double hundred in ODIs and has also played many match-winnings in the IPL. I'm sure he will win many ICC tournaments in the future.

What next for Shubman Gill?

Following Hardik Pandya's return to Mumbai Indians, Gill was named the captain of Gujarat Titans. He will be seen representing India for the first time since the World Cup loss in India's tour of South Africa, which begins later this month.
