On Friday, India and England faced off in the second Test of their five-match bilateral series at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

India chose to bat first, but were rocked early by the loss of Rohit Sharma. Thereafter, despite a few solid partnerships the innings was largely a one-man show as Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 209, out of the team's total of 396.

In reply, England were motoring along at 114/1 before Jasprit Bumrah took centre stage, dismissing Joe Root, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes to finish with 6/45 and hand India a 143-run lead, extended to 171 by the openers by the end of day 2.

On day 3, James Anderson removed both openers cheaply but India's Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill batted with promise, scoring 81 for the third wicket to extend the lead past 250. This score is unlikely to be easily chased in the fourth innings, but Ben Stokes' England have made a habit of pulling off big chases.

Ever since the all-rounder took over the Test team, his partnership with coach Brendon McCullum has led to quite a few improbable chases being put to bed. The highest of these came against India in Birmingham, in July 2022.

After Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104) took the visitors to 416 in the first innings, follow-up totals of 284 and 245 meant England had to chase 378. They did so in style, winning by seven wickets on day 5 thanks to an unbroken stand of 269 between Joe Root (142*) and Jonny Bairstow (114*).

England: Highest Test chases under Ben Stokes
Score Opposition Venue Year
378/3 India Birmingham 2022
299/5 New Zealand Nottingham 2022
296/3 New Zealand Leeds 2022
279/5 New Zealand Lord's 2022
254/7 Australia Leeds 2023

The chase of 378 against India is also England's highest successful chase of all time. The story could yet be different in India, however, where England's highest 4th-innings score is 241/5, scored in 1964.
