Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Babar Azam, following his poor form and the team’s under-par results is likely to lose his captaincy ahead of the upcoming Australia tour.

Following the underwhelming results in the last two ICC mega-events, i.e., the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023 and the T20 World Cup in 2024, Babar Azam has faced a lot of scrutiny. His form with the bat hasn’t helped him either.

In the 50-over World Cup in India where Pakistan finished 5th after being defeated by India, Australia, Afghanistan, South Africa and New Zealand, Babar was only able to score 320 runs in the 9 innings that he played at an under-par strike rate of 82.90. He was also replaced by Shaheen Afridi as the captain of the T20I side and Shan Masood from the Test side before they toured Australia at the end of the year.

What was Babar's captaincy record after being resintated?

However, just months after being replaced as the captain, Babar was reinstated as Pakistan’s white-ball captain with Shaheen just getting to lead the side in 5 games. Since his return, Pakistan has lost a 4-T20I series against England 2-0 after winning a series against Ireland 2-1.

What shook Pakistan cricket was their super over defeat against the USA in the T20 World Cup which raised a lot of questions against Babar as Pakistan went home just after the group stage with wins just over Ireland and Canada to their name.

As Pakistan readies itself to tour Australia and Africa for the white-ball tours after their home series against England, the soap opera of PCB continues as recent reports suggest that the 29-year-old is set to lose his captaincy yet again.

Notably, Babar Azam who will be playing Pakistan's domestic One Day league, Champions One Day Cup 2024 for Stallions will not be leading them as a captain. He will be playing in the tournament under the 23-year-old, Mohammad Haris.
