Gillespie spoke about Babar's poor form and said that the runs would eventually come and that his decision to step down from captaincy was in the best interest of the team.

Was Babar Azam right to step down from Pakistan captaincy?

Gillespie talked about Babar having conversations regarding the decision with Gary Kirsten who is the white-ball coach of Pakistan and how serious the 29-year-old was regarding this decision.

"I wouldn't say that it [the decision] is out of form. He just hasn't scored the runs like he'd have liked. He is hitting the ball well so the runs will come. He is a quality player and I'm looking forward to him doing well in this series. Leaving the captaincy was his personal decision. It was in the best interest of the team and personally," said Gillespie.

"He had his initial conversation with Gary [Kirsten]. He communicated his thinking and feelings with Gary. We are fully supportive of him. He thought deeply about it and it is a great honour for anyone to captain their country. He didn't take that decision lightly, but it was in the best interest of Pakistan cricket and himself to allow someone else to take the opportunity to lead the side," he added.
