Coming into the 2023 World Cup, Pakistan cricket had been in a good place. Despite a slightly underwhelming Asia Cup campaign and rumours of dressing room rifts, they entered the global tournament as the No 1 ODI side in the world.

They even got off to a good start, winning their first two matches against Netherlands and Sri Lanka, pulling off a World Cup-record chase in the latter game. However, after losing four in a row Pakistan were left trailing behind the top four as their tournament began to unravel.

They stayed alive with wins over Bangladesh and New Zealand but by the time their final match against England rolled around, they were left with too much to do, and failed to qualify for the semifinals for a third World Cup in a row.

The days since their exit have been rather tumultuous, with many prominent figures calling for various changes in the coaching staff, captain and players.

'Babar Azam should remain Pakistan captain' - Mohammed Yousuf speaks up amid rumoured PCB reshuffle

On Tuesday, former Pakistan batter Mohammed Yousuf took to his YouTube channel to express his thoughts on the current state of Pakistan cricket. He said,

When we changed Sarfaraz [Ahmed] in 2019, the same people who were on the PCB committee then are there now. I checked the record, and his captaincy record was good, although his batting was starting to decline, and this could have been easily dealt with behind closed doors. So he should not have been removed as captain then.

We should not make the same mistake again. Babar Azam has already been captaining for two or three years. There may be some deficiencies, but again, the committee can sit down with him and talk about these things. They can say, for example, "We will give you one more year," and if it doesn't work out then he can be changed. But there is no need to do it in a hurry now.

Yousuf's video comes out on a day when PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf met with former international players Younis Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir and Wahab Riaz in order to discuss improvements that could be made for Pakistan cricket.

As per media sources, the outcome of the meeting was that a new team selection committee would be formed, whose duties would commence with picking a team for Pakistan's Test tour of Australia.
