The 2022 Asian Games could be a historic one for India, as the country participates in cricket for the first time ever at the tournament.

This is only the third edition of the Asian Games at which cricket will be played. The 2010 and 2014 tournaments were won by Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (men) and Pakistan twice (women).

This year, the women's tournament began with the qualifiers on 19 September and is scheduled to run until 25 September. The men's tournament will be from 27 September to 7 October.

India played their first match on 21 September, taking on Malaysia in the first quarterfinal match-up.

Shafali, Jemimah star for India in rain-affected match

Malaysia won the toss and elected to field first. Indian openers Shafali Varma and captain Smriti Mandhana got off to a flyer, before the latter was dismissed for 27 and rain began to fall with India 60/1 in 5.4 overs.

After an hour's delay, the match was reduced to 15 overs a side, but it began to rain runs as Shafali and No 3 Jemimah Rodrigues went after the Malaysian bowling. The pair pur on 86 runs in 46 balls before Shafali was trapped LBW for 67 off just 39 balls.

Thereafter, Richa Ghosh's cameo (21* off 7) helped India finish on a massive 173/2 in 15 overs. Jemimah remained unbeaten on 47.

 

 

Why did India advance to the final after the match was abandoned?

Malaysia were only able to play two deliveries before the rain set in again and forced a match abandonment. India qualified for the semi-final as the higher seeded team.

When is Team India's next match?

Having qualified for the semi-final stage, India will be in action next on 24 September at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field. They will play the winner of quarterfinal 4 between Bangladesh and Hong Kong, scheduled for 22 September.
