The Lucknow Super Giants made a big impression in their first Indian Premier League season a year ago and will be looking to build on those strong foundations in 2023.

Chosen alongside the Gujarat Titans, who won the title in their maiden campaign, as one of two new franchises, the Super Giants made it to the playoffs at the first attempt.

However, defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the eliminator meant their season came to an end and the Super Giants – who started IPL 2023 with a convincing 50-run triumph over the Delhi Capitals on April 1 – are eager to avenge that disappointment this time around.

Here, the Sporting News documents everything you need to know about the Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2023.

A stellar opening season saw the Super Giants finish third in the standings with nine wins from 14 matches, before disappointment in the playoffs.

Rajat Patidar's sublime unbeaten 112 set the tone for RCB, who posted a daunting 207/4 at Eden Gardens.

KL Rahul made 79 and Deepak Hooda a brisk 45 off 26 but ultimately the Super Giants were beaten by 14 runs.

The Super Giants have bolstered their ranks with fresh faces to give their fans hope of going even further this time around.

West Indies star Nicholas Pooran fetched a cool 16 crore at the IPL auction. The left-hander has shown he is adaptable in franchise cricket, impressing in Australia, Pakistan, and the Caribbean.

KL Rahul retains the captaincy after a superb first season, in which his 616 runs was bettered only by Jos Buttler's mightily impressive 863. Rahul was drafted for the 2022 season, having previously represented Punjab Kings. He has also had IPL spells with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Quinton de Kock, joining up with the team following South Africa's ODI series with Netherlands, adds star power and big hitting. He brought 6.75 crore in the 2022 auction and averaged 36.28 with the bat – including a top score of 140 not out against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Australia international Marcus Stoinis and England quick Mark Wood are the Super Giants' other international recruits – the latter took a five-for in their opening win of IPL 2023 against the Capitals.
