ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Antonio Rudiger capped a gargantuan defensive effort from Real Madrid by settling an epic UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Manchester City with the decisive penalty.
Following last week's pulsating 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, Carlo Ancelotti's men drew first blood through Rodrygo.
City dominated proceedings, as they have for large stretches of the captivating ties between the side over the past three seasons. And yet, after this 1-1 draw, they've been eliminated by the 14-time winners and masters of this competition on two of those occasions.
It felt like there would only be one winner when Kevin De Bruyne levelled with the hosts in the ascendancy. However, even though a tactical case could be made for both switches, Pep Guardiola's decision to remove both De Bruyne and Erling Haaland before the shootout looked foolish when Andriy Lunin saved tame attempts from Bernardo Silva and De Bruyne's replacement Mateo Kovacic. Afterwards, the City manager said Haaland, De Bruyne and defender Manuel Akanji had asked to be substituted as a punishing encounter ticked past 90 minutes.

City drew first blood during penalties as Ederson saved from Luka Modric. The City keeper scored his team's fifth with aplomb after Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden also converted. But Madrid were perfect after Modric's false start, with Jude Bellingham, Lucas Vazquez, Nacho and his tireless centre-back partner Rudiger setting up a showdown with Bayern Munich and a shot at number 15.
Man City vs Real Madrid final score
Fulltime | Goalscorers | |
Man City | 1 (4) | De Bruyne 76' |
Real Madrid | 1 (4) | Rodrygo 12' |
*Real Madrid won 4-3 on penalties
Lineups:
Man City (4-1-4-1 right to left): 31. Ederson (GK) — 2. Kyle Walker, 25. Manuel Akanji (5. John Stones), 3. Ruben Dias, 24. Josko Gvardiol — 16. Rodri — 20. Bernardo Silva, 17. Kevin De Bruyne (8. Mateo Kovacic), 47. Phil Foden, 10. Jack Grealish (11. Jeremy Doku) — 9. Erling Haaland (19. Julian Alvarez).
Real Madrid (4-2-3-1 right to left): 13. Andriy Lunin (GK) — 2. Dani Carvajal (3. Eder Militao), 22. Antonio Rudiger, 6. Nacho, 23. Ferland Mendy — 12. Eduardo Camavinga, 8. Toni Kroos (10. Luka Modric) — 15. Federico Valverde, 5. Jude Bellingham, 11. Rodrygo (21. Brahim Diaz) — 7. Vinicius Junior (17. Lucas Vazquez).
By that point, Rodrygo once again tormenting City with a 12th-minute opener felt like it happened a lifetime ago.
The Brazil forward was on target eight days ago in the Spanish capital, having scored a last-gasp brace to spark an incredible turnaround when these two sides clashed in the 2022 semis.
Holders City responded strongly and once again enjoyed the lion's share of possession. Haaland looped a header against the crossbar and De Bruyne tested Lunin in between some unusually wayward work.
But a defence marshalled by Nacho and Rudiger held out until the break on a ground where they were hammered 4-0 last season.
Halftime did not interrupt the pattern of the contest and City chipped away at a stout Madrid defence with little tangible reward. Rudiger, Nacho and Lunin were put through a set-piece bombardment, surviving by any means necessary.
De Bruyne and Silva were way below their usual standards of precision on the final ball, while Lunin made sharp saves from Jack Grealish and Foden as Haaland hustled and harried in vain for a few clear blades of grass.
Jeremy Doku's introduction in place of the excellent Grealish served to open things up and gave City added attacking thrust against a flagging Madrid defence. The breakthrough came 14 minutes from the end of normal time when Rudiger lost his footing and tiredly shovelled Doku's low cross in De Bruyne's direction. The Belgian maestro made no mistake, rifling into the roof of the net. The surprise came five minutes later when Doku picked him out once more and he blazed over.

Madrid scrapped their way into the additional period and Guardiola caused a stir by replacing Haaland with Alvarez. The Argentina striker almost made an instant impact when a Doku cross flashed between him and the face of goal.
Doku's threat subsided thereafter as tired bodies and minds clouded the quality, with an exhausted Rudiger wasting the best chance of the additional period on a rare Madrid foray.
The Germany defender was far more sure-footed from 12 yards, reward for his and Madrid's incredible fortitude having spent so much of this contest under the pump.
For all the lazy talk of City's inevitability and a "double-treble" after they dared to take a two-point Premier League lead with six games remaining over the weekend, sport at the sharp end comes down to the finest margins, the cruellest twist and the most exultant highs. Despite all the nonsense, it's what keeps us coming back every time.
Man City vs Real Madrid penalty shootout as it happened
Manchester City's reign as champions of Europe is over. They dominated for long periods of this tie and might now regret the freewheeling nature of the 3-3 draw in Madrid last week. They were less than a quarter of an hour from elimination when De Bruyne scored. A draw was the least they deserved for their endeavours and Ederson's save gave them first blood in the shootout. But with Haaland and De Bruyne substituted, tame efforts from Silva and Kovacic gave Madrid an opportunity they did not refuse. Thanks for joining us.

Man City vs Real Madrid live updates, highlights, and commentary
Fulltime
Lucas gets back to tie up Doku. After 180 captivating minutes, we will decide our semifinalist from 12 yards. Again, a reminder that Guardiola has substituted Haaland and De Bruyne.
120th minute: Foden to Alvarez, he's driven wide and shoots at Lunin. That might be the last of the chances. One added minute.
118th minute: A Madrid chance. What's Nacho doing up there? He appears to have no idea. Mendy crosses for Vazquez and Gvardiol is in the way again.
117th minute: A chance for Madrid to break. Bellingham looks crossfield to Lucas and sells him a touch short. Gvardiol barrels in bravely to make the tackle.

116th minute: City are painstakingly trying to pick the lock. Madrid stand firm.
112th minute: Lucas has a dip from range and that's not half bad. De Bruyne and Akanji come off for City. Pep, there might be penalties in about 10 minutes!
111th minute: Carvajal is leaving us. He's absolutely spent, seemingly cramping in both legs. Militao comes on for him. Stones and Kovacic, who don't exactly feel like natural penalty takers, are about to come on for City.
Kickoff: Second half (extra time)
Lots of noise in the break from the home crowd. They want their team to avoid penalties. By winning, obviously.
105th minute+2: Walker flicks it half clear. Then blocks and the near post. Oh, but what's this? Antonio Rudiger should score! The centre-back had stayed up and lashes his left boot at the ball to send it wide from close range.
105th minute+1: Bellingham gets down the right and wins a corner off Dias. Is that Madrid's first? I can't remember
105th minute: Mendy sees Silva out of his way and it's a goal kick. There'll be two added minutes.
103rd minute: The corner is cleared, De Bruyne flings in a cross that Lunin should be able to throw his cap on but he makes a mess of it. Doku chips goalwards and he catches that one.
102nd minute: A wait for the corner as Vinicius departs. Seems he damaged his ego in that duel with Walker.
101st minute: Modric with a sensuous little gem of a pass from the right touchline. Vinicius looks like he's in, but here comes Kyle Walker! Titanic stuff from the City captain. His team get right back at it and Doku has a shot blocked behind for a corner.
Nail-biting 😬

99th minute: Ball in from Silva and Foden misses his kick! Given the player and the season he's having, you'd have expected better.
98th minute: Sloppy from City as Foden over-hits a simple pass to Akanji, who jogs after it before realising Bellingham is interested. Alvarez isn't tired, mind, and he scoots down the right to have a chipped cross cleared.
95th minute: I'm mesmerised by Doku's feet from about 50 yards away, so all the very best to Carvajal. Foden can't get a shot off and Madrid hurry a clearance behind.
93rd minute: Doku gets around the outside and delivers the sort of cross Haaland would have loved. As it is, Alvarez can't get on the end of it.
91st minute: Bellingham runs right into Dias's shoulder. The City defender famously spends a lot of time in the gym. As such, I reckon that's a sore one.
Kickoff: First half (extra time)
Well, well. There is a City change before we resume and it's Julian Alvarez on for Erling Haaland, who has now failed to score in four City appearances against Madrid. He's also their penalty taker...
Fulltime: After how that half played out, Madrid will be delighted to reach extra time but some of their players, who have given every ounce, will be dreading another half hour in the legs. But then this is Real Madrid in the Champions League, so they might just do a thing. How Ancelotti galvanises his men and uses the rest of his bench will be key. City are getting some intense chat from Guardiola. Ancelotti looks more like a kindly father figure asking if everyone's okay. Both playing their roles.
90th minute+5: City corner. It will be this and extra time....lovely delivery from De Bruyne, Gvardiol should make a better connection and Haaland diverts it onto the roof of the net.
90th minute+3: Doku on the charge, of course. Here's Rodri on his left foot and he scuffs the ball through to Lunin.
90th minute+2: Carvajal quite hilariously buys a free-kick after Doku catches him with a flailing arm. You know what, fair play to him. That's pretty funny.
90th minute+1: There will be four minutes of stoppage time.
90th minute: Doku tries to dance through but can't. And Madrid get away. Brahim... and Rodri takes the yellow in textbook fashion.
88th minute: Haaland rises at the back post and heads into the side netting. Half a chance at the very best.
87th minute: So much is going through Doku now. Akanji's cutback in betwixt and between but Madrid can only scramble behind.
84th minute: In the interests of The Narrative, former City youngster Brahim replaces Rodrygo for Madrid.
82nd minute: Oh, Kevin De Bruyne! I'm not sure you're allowed to miss chances that good at this stage of a tie this tightly poised and not pay for it. Doku again against a weary Madrid defence who must already hate the sight of him. The cutback is on a plate and De Bruyne blazes over. Had to score.
78th minute: De Bruyne in the mood now and he larrups one just over with his left foot. Luka Modric coming on to try to calm things down for Madrid.
76th minute: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!! Kevin De Bruyne!!!!!!
Doku has the desired impact as he gets to the byline and fires in a ball that an exhausted Rudiger can only shovel to De Bruyne, who rifles into the roof of the net.

72nd minute: Grealish makes way. He's been very good tonight, one of City's best players. But they need an increased goal threat and Guardiola hopes Doku can provide it.
70th minute: Grealish checks inside to shoot. He fires it low and Lunin gathers at the second attempt with Foden lurking very close by. Jeremy Doku is getting ready to come on and gets a big slap on the bottom from Guardiola.
66th minute: Long passage of City play, moving left to right. De Bruyne, who's been poor tonight, makes a mess of the volleyed cross.
64th minute: A City attack ends with a drop ball because the ball hit the ref. Obviously everyone is delighted.
62nd minute: Rodri fouls Camavinga, Guardiola applauds (for all you tactical fouls fans) and tries to gee up the crowd.
61st minute: Bit of an untidy passage, Foden with a snap shot that Rudiger blocks, because he blocks everything. Now a yellow card for Gvardiol for bringing down Bellingham. Again that comes from City having to slam the door on a Madrid transition. It feels like a pivotal moment of the match right here.
59th minute: Carvajal leads a breakaway. Grealish hurls himself into a challenge. He thinks he got the ball. The referee quite understandably disagrees and books him.
58th minute: Rudiger half-clears Walker's cross. Akanji never gets over the shot and sends it skywards.
56th minute: Blue Moon rings around the ground. You sense if City get one this place will explode.
55th minute: Grealish wins City's latest corner. Glanced on by Gvardiol and Camavinga heads out of the goalmouth.
54th minute: Walker tears after Vinicius and wins their latest race. The crown laps it up.
52nd minute: City clearly do not fancy Lunin under the high ball. They're bombarding him. This one falls to Foden, but he can't get enough purchase on the shot.
51st minute: Nacho Fernandez, what are you doing? De Bruyne overhits a through ball to Haaland and Nacho accidentally rounds his own keeper. Haaland would have been happy with that touch, completely did Lunin. The skipper is able to clear behind.
50th minute: Rodrygo cuts inside Foden but thumps his shot way over. Madrid probably should have held onto it for a bit more respite there. They have some now as there are two balls on the pitch.
49th minute: Silva chips over Haaland. City's final ball hasn't been where it needs to be tonight.
47th minute: Grealish meets a volley sweetly from the right wing delivery but Lunin watches it well through a crowd of bodies to make the save.
46th minute: Grealish back into his work. I'm sure Carvajal missed him during the break. The ball ends up with Silva, whose cross is booted behind by Rudiger under pressure from Haaland.
Kickoff: Second half
Off we go again. Drama surely awaits...
Halftime
Madrid have an absolute shocker with a free-kick on the left and De Bruyne and Foden fashion a break. Bellingham is back to get a foot in and that'll be that for the first half. More gripping, absorbing stuff from these two but Rodrygo's 12th-minute goal - on a ground where Los Blancos were humiliated last season - has them 45 minutes away from the semis.
45th minute+1: Foden, whose right-wing berth has meant him existing on the margins, clatters a speculative long-ranger over.
45th minute: Patient, methodical stuff from City. It ends with an excellent Carvajal header behind to deny Haaland and Silva. Ooof, Lunin looks as comfortable under these in-swinging De Bruyne corners as he would in a dentist's chair. He tips over. The corner for the right is cleared and there'll be two minutes of stoppage time. Given how Madrid have tried to kill the clock since scoring, they'll be pretty happy with that.
40th minute: Vinicius takes his turn flying in on Grealish. The referee holds out his arms, which is an odd signal. Does he want a hug? Anyway, Haaland forces Lunin into a hurried clearance. Suddenly the visitors look like they could quite do with halftime.
39th minute: It's a nice angle for De Bruyne but the Madrid centre-backs are first again and there's an offside in there somewhere.
38th minute: Grealish skins Carvajal, who obliges with one of the yellowest of yellow card challenges. Full marks for the protests of innocence.
36th minute: Haaland drives through the Madrid midfield. Are you watching, Roy Keane? He feeds Grealish, whose effort is deflected behind by a hurtling Rudiger. Again the corner comes to nought and De Bruyne hits a cross straight to Lunin.
34th minute: Akanji pops up down the right flank and City hustle another corner. They've not really made any of them count. De Bruyne slaps in a low one that causes brief confusion but nothing more.
33rd minute: Madrid try another break but Bellingham is subsumed by a sea of sky blue. City rumble forward and De Bruyne clatters over left-footed from 25 yards.
32nd minute: Grealish changes gears to glide past Camavinga. His side-footed effort is deflected wide.
29th minute: Bellingham gets in to brilliantly dispossess Akanji and Madrid are away. They have men over. Valverde down the right, Gvardiol makes a vital headed block.
28th minute: Madrid and the Lazarus-like Carvajal see off the initial corner. Rodri lofts one to the back post, Haaland nods into the goalmouth but Lunin gets there first.
27th minute: Oh, there's pace on that, though. A De Bruyne rasper that Lunin turns around the post. Carvajal is down in some disarray which means City aren't allowed to take a quick corner.
26th minute: Grealish with a soft shoe shuffle into the Madrid box. De Bruyne hoists a leg out to divert the ball goalwards but there's not much pace on it.
25th minute: Case in point as Vinicius gets goal side. For reasons best known to the veteran full-back, Dani Carvajal is the man up there with him and has his shot blocked. Valverde sends the loose ball high and wide. We'll allow it after that beauty he scored last week, but that was horrid.
24th minute: Madrid look long towards Vinicius and Rodrygo. Their old mate Walker is there to mop up. However, City are rushing things a touch in the Madrid half and it's leaving them exposed on the break again.
19th minute: My word how hasn't that gone in. De Bruyne is down the right channel again. Lunin doesn't fully deal with his low cross. Haaland gets up among a gaggle of bodies to head against the crossbar. The rebound plops down to Silva, but he can't turn it in.
17th minute: Dias spreads play to Grealish, who does well not only to keep it in but to set up Silva for a cross. Haaland rises at the back post but can't keep his effort down.
15th minute: City have responded pretty well to going behind. De Bruyne forces Lunin to tip a corner over. He takes the next out short to Grealish and the Madrid goalkeeper punches clear, albeit while not looking entirely comfortable.
12th minute: GOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Rodrygo!!!!
Madrid lead as Rodrygo beats Ederson at the second attempt. But that all came from a delicious touch from Jude Bellingham, pulling the ball out of the sky and killing it stone dead. That allowed Vinicius to cross. Ederson denied his countryman brilliantly but could do nothing to thwart him on the rebound. Game on!

11th minute: Madrid looking more calmly assured in possession than they did at pretty much any time in the first leg. A patient passing move ends with Camavinga taking aim from outside the box and Ederson collecting his dipping shot.
8th minute: Lovely first-time pass from Akanji to send De Bruyne scampering down the right channel. His low cross is too close to Lunin. You'd expect better from the Belgian maestro from there.
5th minute: Walker has wandered down a cul-de-sac a couple of times in quick succession, forced to win throws off Rodrygo. It's something to watch with the City defence lacking Stones' expertise in the build-up. Grealish looks for Gvardiol down the Madrid right but the attack breaks down.
4th minute: It's actually quite cagey right now, which makes a change for these two. Akanji stepping into midfield when City are in possession and he's into his work pretty smoothly.
2nd minute: An early punt forward for Haaland and he barges into Nacho. Maybe he's keen on a new jousting partner after getting very little change out of Rudiger. Grealish hurries Lunin into a sloppy clearance.
Kickoff: First half
City get us underway. Madrid won the toss and turned the teams around. To be fair, you don't usually need to avoid the 192 for a good few hours.
2 mins before kickoff: The teams are out. The City fan collective the 1894 Group has put together a very impressive Tifo with Phil Foden aboard "The Wembley Express" going past Manchester landmarks such as the Apollo Theatre and the McVite's biscuit factory. The bus number is 192, the most regular service from Foden's native Stockport into Manchester city centre. Impressive attention to detail.

10 mins before kickoff: After last season's ordeal at the Etihad, Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde described City's home ground as "the most difficult" stadium he has played in. The atmosphere was definitely ramped up to 11 that night. The Champions League being the final frontier to conquer, the thirst for revenge over the 2022 semifinal and a fabulous City performance made for a heady cocktail. With the mountain scaled and the Champions League trophy on display tonight, we're not yet at the same level of fever pitch. But the stands are packed and we're ready to roll. I'll get back to you on the atmosphere if there's an early City goal!
30 mins before kickoff: Both teams are out warming up - Madrid fashionably late - to the stylings of DJ Sonny Fodera. He's just dropped Seven Nation Army. Do the basics and do them well on nights like tonight, right?
— Dom Farrell (@DomFarrell1986) April 17, 2024
50 mins before kickoff: For all that he remains a man of intricate tactical detail, Pep Guardiola's City have developed as a European force over recent years through being repeatedly stress-tested in the big moments. The holders are unquestionably "mentality monsters" as a certain rival might say. At this stage of the season, Guardiola tends to go all in on the players he can trust. Any tweaks and flights of fancy must be put away; it's time for the dependables. Manuel Akanji is definitely one of those. He has proved to be an absolute steal since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a cut-price deal last August, impressing across a variety of positions in the de
However, John Stones roving into midfield from defence was Guardiola's trump card against Madrid last year and the England international was also superb as City turned the game around after halftime at the Bernabeu last week. In his absence, Akanji might do the Stones role, a task where he is functional rather than exceptional. The makeup of the defence and the midfield zones they are most likely to occupy in possession also makes it feel like Phil Foden will be stationed on the right wing as opposed to at the heart of the action.
1 hr 10 mins before kickoff: And this is the City team. Walker does make it, with Akanji reverting to centre-back alongside Ruben Dias. That means John Stones has to be content with a place on the bench. The City front six is full-strength.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: The City team will be with us shortly. Whether or not Walker is fit to start for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty with England feels key. Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo each had fun pulling out to the left flank where Walker would have been stationed in Madrid last week. Manuel Akanji dealt with their threat manfully but Walker's recovery pace can be something of an x-factor in this fixture. The 2022 semifinal underlines his importance: none of the six goals City shipped over the course of that tie occurred while Walker (also battling injury on that occasion) was on the field. You expect Pep Guardiola will do all he can to get him out there.
2 hours before kickoff: Carlo Ancelotti, as is his wont, has thrown his Madrid lineup out early. Club captain Nacho gets the nod at centre-back alongside Antonio Rudiger, with Aurelien Tchouameni suspended and Eder Militao only fit enough for a place on the bench. That's the only change from the XI that started the first leg. Whether or not the shape is the same might depend on whether or not Kyle Walker makes it for City.

2 hrs 30 mins before kickoff: So, eight days ago Madrid and City played out an enthralling 3-3 draw, where the holders went 1-0 up, 2-1 down and 3-2 ahead before Federico Valverde capped a night of incredible goals with the best of the bunch. That followed City walloping Madrid 4-0 on this ground last season and their 2022 semifinal that Madrid won 6-5 on aggregate after a 4-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. The 2016 semifinal between these two, which finished 1-0 to Madrid after 180 minutes thanks to a Fernando own goal, was a certifiable cure for insomnia. That seems a very long time ago.
