Real Madrid once again became European champions after their spirited second-half performance saw them storm to a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.
Toni Kroos won the first of his six Champions League winners' medals with Bayern Munich but was injured and missed the final in 2013. Eleven years on, against the same opponents, at the very same stadium, Kroos played a vital role in Madrid's 15th Champions League triumph. The German's corner was swung in and headed home by Dani Carvajal to give Madrid the opener late in the second half.
Kroos announced in May that this final would be his last game for Madrid and what a way to bow out at the very pinnacle of club football. While some may be disappointed at the thought of such a talented player retiring somewhat prematurely — he is only 34 years old — who can blame him for choosing to end his career on his own terms and as a European winner for a sixth time? It would have been incredibly easy for him to seek a final payday in the Saudi Pro League or MLS but there is something quite beautiful about a modern great deciding to retire at his peak.
Vinicius Jr secured the trophy for Carlo Ancelotti's side as the Brazilian lifted the ball over Gregor Kobel after Jude Bellingham picked him out on the left side of the penalty area.

Dortmund started the game incredibly well and took charge of the first half as they pressed Madrid high in their own half and forced uncharacteristic mistakes.
Their best period of play came as a result of finding Karim Adeyemi in space behind Carvajal, who quite simply didn't have the legs to keep up with the pace of the 22-year-old Dortmund forward. Adeyemi's first opportunity came as he looked to take the ball around Thibaut Courtois but that saw his angle tighten and ruin his shot at goal.
Ian Maatsen, who has attracted attention around Europe this season, then drifted from the left into the centre of the pitch before sliding through a sublime pass to Niclas Fullkrug. The German striker, who scored in the semifinal first leg versus PSG, slid along the surface to try to poke the ball past Courtois, which he managed, but it rebounded off the post and Madrid cleared the danger. The offside flag may have spared Madrid in any case.
The man of the match from the 2022 final then made a series of saves and showed no signs that it was his first Champions League game between the sticks this season after sitting out with an ACL injury for almost all of 2023/24.
Madrid went into the break in need of inspiration and they came out for the second half and forced Kobel into his first real save of the game. Vinicius was brought down on the edge of the box and Kroos took aim for the top-left corner, but the Dortmund keeper matched the strike.
Carvajal was then left wide open at the far post and had his effort terrifically stopped by Maatsen on the six-yard line. The Madridistas woke up and, for the first time, you heard their belief grow.
Madrid really kicked into gear after the hour mark as they surged down the wings through Rodrygo and Vinicius but each time they looked to pick someone out in the box, nobody was there.
Vinicius then clipped in a delightful ball aimed toward Bellingham in the box but the Englishman couldn't get his head to it and Kobel failed to claim it mid-air, which saw the ball end up inches wide of the far post.
That period of pressure proved too much for Dortmund as one of Kroos' corners was finally taken advantage of by the La Liga side. This time, the former Bayern player whipped it short and Carvajal beat Fullkrug to it by flicking it past Kobel to give Madrid the lead.
Madrid then hounded Dortmund's 18-yard box in search of a second and did so through their brilliant Brazilian, Vinicius. He stroked home from the left past Kobel and sealed the victory after Maatsen's error.
Dortmund thought they had fought their way back into it as Fullkrug found the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside.

FT: THAT'S IT! REAL MADRID HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!
90+5 minute: Dortmund have a late corner but Courtois punches it away.
90+3 minute: Vini is substituted and is booed loudly by the Borussia fans and cheered even louder by the Madrid faithful. Ancelotti's side are seconds away from history.
90th minute: There are five minutes of added time.
87th minute: Dortmund have the ball in the back of the net but Fullkrug was offside.
84th minute: GOALLLLL! MADRID HAVE THEIR SECOND! Surely that's game over now? It's Vinicius Jr who strokes past Kobel brilliantly.
81st minute: Madrid are knocking at the door for a second here as Dortmund can't get out of their own half.
74th minute: GOALLLLL! CARVAJAL HEADS HOME FROM KROOS' CORNER!
73rd minute: Madrid are keeping the pressure on here with a series of corners.
69th minute: CHANCE! Madrid again go close as Vini's clipped ball is aimed toward Bellingham who can't quite get his head on the ball and it narrowly goes wide after Kobel failed to collect it.
66th minute: Madrid are really kicking into gear here as this time Rodrygo gets the better of Maatsen and puts in a tantalising cross which is batted away.
63rd minute: According to Opta, Julian Brandt has created four chances so far tonight for Dortmund - the last player to record more in a Champions League final was Luka Modric for Real Madrid against Atletico Madrid in 2015/16 with seven.
58th minute: This tie is so perfectly poised as Dortmund have had the better chances but Madrid continue to show glimpses of danger on the counter.
49th minute: Vini is brought down on the edge of the box and Kroos' free-kick forces Kobel into his first real save of the game. The former Bayern player then takes the corner but it's headed over the bar.
46th minute: The second half is underway after a beautiful display from Dortmund's ultras.

HT: Well, what an interesting first half that was! Dortmund may rue those missed chances as they had Madrid's backs to the wall for a good quarter of an hour. Ancelotti's side will not panic, though, and you can fully expect the Spanish giants to get their act together in the second half.
45th minute: There have been four minutes added on to the first half.
43rd minute: The Austrian midfielder is then booked for a slightly late challenge.
42nd minute: Sabitzer forces Courtois into another save but this time it's one he's very much so expected to make. It earns Dortmund a corner which is cleared by Mendy.
40th minute: The game has entered a slightly flat period after such an impressive start by Dortmund.
35th minute: Vinicius Jr is given the first yellow card of the match as he goes sliding in on Kobel. The Brazilian is lucky he just about fails to make contact with the goalkeeper's ankle as he would have been sent off otherwise.
32nd minute: Something doesn't quite feel right about Madrid so far. They're struggling to string a sequence of passes together and defensively look nervous.
28th minute: Brandt plays through Adeyemi down the left flank and Carvajal cannot handle the tricky winger. His shot is well saved by Courtois but it falls to Fullkrug who can't get the rebound on target.
26th minute: Could this be the turning point? Just as Dortmund were gaining momentum, Can is down injured and may require a substitute to replace him. Ancelotti regroups his men and takes a moment to reshape.
24th minute: ANOTHER chance for the Germans to take the lead and this was the closest they've come yet as Fullkrug hits the post! The Yellow Wall smells danger and they've upped the volume (as if that was possible)!
23rd minute: HUGE penalty shout for Dortmund as Adeyemi is brought down after he appeared to get a touch on the ball.
21st minute: What a glorious opportunity for Dortmund! Adeyemi is played in over the top by Hummels and he takes the ball around Courtois but the angle is too tight to get a shot at goal.
14th minute: A fantastic move from Dortmund sees Fullkrug in behind who lays it off to Brandt but the German can't quite direct his shot goalwards.
12th minute: The first real chance falls to Valverde who hits it on his weaker foot but it's far too high and wide from the Madrid midfielder.
11th minute: Madrid are somewhat grabbing control now and spraying the ball across the surface well.
7th minute: Dortmund have opened the game well and have forced Madrid into some early errors.
3rd minute: After a series of pitch invasions by spectators, the game finally continues.
Kickoff: We're underway at Wembley! Both teams are attacking their own fans in the first half.
8:00 p.m.: "We're back in town to steal the crown!" The Dortmund fans with an incredible mosaic before kickoff.

4:45 p.m.: Dortmund have been the most committed defensive side in this season's Champions League. They have recovered more balls (529), gone in for more tackles (207) and attempted more clearances (251) than any other side in 2023/24.
But there's apparently no danger of them parking the bus today.

3:46 p.m.: Carlo Ancelotti could win the Champions League for the fifth time as a coach today. Having twice won the European Cup with AC Milan as a player, it's very much a competition he has made his own over the years.
But how does he rank among the most successful coaches in the tournament's history? Find out here.
3 p.m.: Today could be a special day for Marco Reus. Arguably Dortmund's greatest ever player, the forward is leaving the club after this final, with a move to MLS potentially on the cards. Here, we look back at his impressive career and his chance of a dream farewell to BVB.
2:25 p.m.: This is the biggest game in the career of Jude Bellingham, who has already enjoyed success at this level of football of which most players can only dream. The 20-year-old is back in England, lining up against his old club and ready to lead Real Madrid's charge for another Champions League trophy, and perhaps put himself in pole position to win the Ballon d'Or in the process. And he's still 28 days away from his 21st birthday.

1:30 p.m: Today is the day, then. Will it be European title number 15 for Real Madrid or can Borussia Dortmund upset the odds and gain sporting immortality alongside their heroes of 1997? There's also the small matter of Jude Bellingham versus Jadon Sancho at Wembley Stadium and farewells for modern greats Toni Kroos and Marco Reus. Not bad, all in all.
