India's Praveen Chithravel qualified for the World Athletics Champions 2023 by winning a men’s triple jump event at an athletics meet in Havana, Cuba, on May 6.
Chithravel won the athletics meet by recording a leap of 17.37m which is now a national record. The Previous national record was held by Renjith Maheswary who recorded 17.30m. The qualifying cut for the World Athletics Championships was 17.20m.

The 2023 edition of the World Athletics Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary between August 19 to 27.
Who is Praveen Chithravel?
The 21-year-old Indian athlete hails from the state of Tamil Nadu. He had previously won Bronze medal in triple jump at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires.
At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Chithravel missed a podium finish by a whisker as he finished fourth with a best jump of 16.89 m.
Earlier in March 2023, he had gone past the qualifying standard for the Asian Games 2023, which was set at 16.60m by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). He had recorded a best jump of 17.17m at the second Indian Open Jumps Competition held in Bellary, Karnataka.
