India have fielded a star-studded contingent for the upcoming Sudirman Cup 2023 which is set to be held in Suzhou, China from May 14-21.
It is an international mixed-team badminton tournament organised by the Badminton World Federation. It has not been a happy hunting ground for India as they have neither won a medal in the tournament nor reached the semi-final ever.
However, the best Indian shuttles are taking part in this edition of the competition, including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, with the hopes of amending the poor record. World no. 9, HS Prannoy, is India's best bet in men's singles whereas Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will try to finish atop the podium in the men's doubles category.
Sindhu, who ended her 2022 season early after picking up injury at the Commonwealth Games, has started hitting her stride. Having started the year with two successive first-round defeats, she finished runners-up Madrid Spain Masters 2023.
Meanwhile, Rankireddy and Shetty won the Swiss Open 2023 doubles crown last month and will be looking to continue their rich vein of form.
The Indian team created history by winning the prestigious Thomas Cup last year and also finished with a bronze medal in the Asian Mixed Team championships earlier this year which has made them a force to reckon with in the world badminton circuit.
However, popular names like Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap have been left out of the Indian squad.
