Bindyarani Devi won the silver medal in the women’s 55kg event at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 which is being held in Jinju, South Korea on Friday.
She managed a total effort of 194 kg (83kg + 111kg) to clinch the second spot in the non-Olympic 55kg category.
This was India's first medal at the 2023 Championship.

After lifting 80kg and 83kg in her first two snatch attempts, she increased the load to 85kg. But her lift was called foul which forced her to up the ante in the clean and jerk category.
She pushed her limits and lifted 111 kg in clean and jerk to finish with a cumulative effort of 194kg.
Bindyarani had earlier shifted to the 59kg weight category that features in the Paris Olympics but had to revert to her original 55kg division after she got injured ahead of the selection trials.

Chinese Taipei's Chen Guan-ling won gold with a combined effort of 204kg. Whereas, Vietnam's Vo Thi Quynh Nhu finished third just two kg short of the Indian with 192kg.
However, Mirabai Chanu had a disappointing outing in this event as she finished sixth overall in the 49kg category at the Asian Championships with a total of 194kg which was far from her personal best of 207kg. But it must be noted that she was returning from an injury after five months during which she underwent rehabilitation at NIS Patiala.
“Mira only has to participate here. We will take it easy,” head coach Vijay Sharma had told PTI before the event. “She will just participate and lift 85kg (snatch)...110kg (clean and jerk), totals that she can easily get.”
