India have named a 54-member squad for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships will be held in Pattaya, Thailand, between July 12 and July 16.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who recently created the Asian record in men’s shot put, has been named in the squad alongside long jumper Murali Sreeshankar.

The list, which was finalised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) after assessing the performance of all the athletes in the Federation Cup 2023 and other competitions held before June 6, consists of 28 men and 26 women athletes.

The results at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships which was held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha between June 15 to 19, however, were not considered for the Asian Championships as the final list was sent to Asian Athletics Association (AAA) on June 11.

Among the athletes who are favourites to win a medal in the continental event are Jyothi Yarraji, the national record holder in women’s 100m hurdles and shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor, a gold medallist at the 2018 Asian Games.

Among the notable absentees from the competition is Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra whos is currently preparing for the World Athletics Championships.
