Canada suffered a loss despite defeating Russia 5-1 at the women's world championship Monday.

Captain Marie-Philip Poulin exited the game after she reaggravated her left knee injury late in the first period. Poulin's knee gave way as she went into the boards with Russia's Olga Sosina. The 28-year-old left the ice with a noticeable limp and did not return to the bench.

Poulin, 28, had dressed and skated in warmups for two of Canada's game ahead of her tournament debut on Monday. She originally suffered the knee injury in Les Canadiennes de Montreal's CWHL regular season finale Feb. 24.

Without its captain, Canada still upstaged Russia behind a hat trick from Natalie Spooner, who also added an assist in the victory. Now, it remains to be seen if Poulin reinjuring her knee prevents her from seeing the ice for the remainder of the tournament.
