Based on the hype and betting buzz surrounding Saturday's matchup between the Fever and the Sky (12 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sling), you would think these WNBA squads were better than a combined record of 4-12. But when it comes to the first professional iteration of the Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese rivalry, viewing and betting interest was always going to be high.
Clark has struggled early on with her gargantuan expectations on the WNBA level. One of the most decorated college hoopers of all time is shooting just 37.7 percent from the field (and a pedestrian 32% from three), averaging 5.7 turnovers per game.
Through Indy's turbulent 1-8 start to the season, Clark's win share is -0.1. Still, the NCAA's all-time leading scorer can start lighting it up at a moment's notice, as evidenced by her 30-point game against the Sparks on Tuesday. Sadly, the Fever still lost that game — and they've dropped three consecutive games and four in a row at home.
The Sky had much lower expectations coming into the season, with many oddsmakers and analysts projecting the seemingly rebuilding squad as one of the worst teams in the W. But they have defied the odds, starting 3-3 thanks in large part to Reese's strong play down low.
If the season ended today, Chicago would be in the playoffs as the eight-seed. Indiana would finish second to last, hoping for another star draft pick from the 2025 class to pair with Clark and Aliyah Boston. Still, expect the young stars of this game to get up big for this nationally-televised tilt.
Let's head to BetMGM to identify the best bets and top props for Fever vs. Sky, the first of many WNBA rivalry games between Clark and Reese.
Fever vs. Sky prediction: Top ATS pick
Sky -3.5 at Fever (-105)
The Sky have gone 4-2 ATS this season, and they should have no trouble imposing their will against the smaller, undersized Fever. Reese alone should be a force against Indy's often-overmatched front court, and the Chi should be able to force the mistake-prone Fever into a bunch of turnovers.
Chicago averages more points (80.8 per game) than Indiana (79.1) and also allows far fewer points (79.7 PPG, compared to Indy's 91.2). These teams shoot at an almost identical rate, but the Sky take much better care of the ball. Chi-town ranks third in the W in assists per game (20.8), while averaging the fourth-fewest turnovers (14.0).
Reese and company also rank second in steals and offensive rebounds and fourth in free-throw attempts, so they can be an exhausting team to match up with for 40 minutes. Indiana doesn't have a chance to win this game and Chicago feels like a safe spread bet up to -6.5.
FINAL SCORE PREDICTION: Sky 82, Fever 71 — Chicago wins (-200) and covers the -3.5 spread (-105), and the final score finishes UNDER the projected total of 160.5 (-110).
Fever vs. Sky prediction: Top over/under bet
UNDER 160.5 (-110)
Newsflash: casual bettors love betting the over. And when Caitlin Clark is involved, the casual bettors flood in. As such, the sportsbooks can get away with bumping up the over/under so they can minimize their liability in case Clark gets hot and initiates a three-point contest 10 games into the season.
The bumped-up line means increased value for the under, the path less traveled by mainstream bettors but always preferred by sharps in these cases. When they go high, we go low — and we'll be laughing all the way to the bank when each team hits rough patches of shooting or puts together strings of messy offensive possessions.
Don't get us wrong: our hearts want a crisp, clean game — but our heads tell us it won't happen, at least not across the entire 40 minutes.
FINAL SCORE PREDICTION: Sky 82, Fever 71 — Chicago wins (-200) and covers the -3.5 spread (-105), and the final score finishes UNDER the projected total of 160.5 (-110).
Fever vs. Sky prediction: Top player prop bets
Caitlin Clark points: UNDER 20.5 (-110)
Many bettors will see that Clark dropped 30 on the Sparks on Tuesday, and immediately bet the over on her 20.5-point projection for Saturday's game.
However, it's important to note that (a) Clark still shot just 43.8 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3 that game and (b) she scored a whopping 13 points from the free-throw stripe.
That's nearly double Clark's previous WNBA career-high in free throws and just 3.2 free throws fewer than Chicago's opponents have averaged as a team this season. Don't expect the Sky to make as many mistakes defensively, or send Clark to the line nearly as much as L.A.'s lowly D.
Clark has exceeded 20 points just three times in her nine-game W career, and it would be hard to envision her making it a fourth time against Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
