Rogers Cup 2018: Vasek Pospisil eliminated after straight sets loss to Borna Coric image

Vasek Pospisil knew he would have his "hands full" during his first round matchup against Borna Coric.

Pospisil, who's ranked No. 94 in the latest ATP poll, fell in straight sets, 6-4 6-3, to Coric ending his Rogers Cup campaign. Pospisil wasn't able to break serve throughout the match. Coric managed to steal two break points in the final three games in the second set to advance to the second round.

Pospisil's abrupt exit from Toronto is the latest unfortunate result the 28-year-old encountered this season. He's lost nine of his last 13 matches, including a first round exit at the French Open and Wimbledon.

He's still trying to adjust the mistakes he's been making throughout 2018.

“I feel like I’m hitting the ball great," Pospisil told Sportsnet following Wimbledon. "But in matches, it’s not there. You’ve gotta get to the ball and do that consistently for five sets. There are things that need sharpening up, touching up on.”

Pospisil matched up evenly with Coric. But what seperated the two is when the Croatian converted on 34 percent of returns to Pospisil's 8 percent. With the help of the Aviva Centre's Hawkeye technology, any threat of Pospisil's second-set comeback was thwarted.

As Pospisil looks to gain entry into the US Open in New York, Coric extends his Rogers Cup stay.

Coric is set to face Marin Cilic, who earned a first-round bye to set the matchup with his fellow countryman on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Cilic maintains the head-to-head advantage over Coric, 6-0.
