Rogers Cup 2018: Genie Bouchard, Sloane Stephens exit after quarterfinals loss image

Genie Bouchard's Rogers Cup run has come to an end on Friday night.

After falling in the first round of the singles draw, Bouchard found success on the doubles side alongside partner Sloane Stephens. Bouchard, who was winless in doubles action this season entering Montreal, rolled through the first two rounds to set up the quarterfinal matchup with No. 2-ranked duo Latisha Chan and Ekaterina Makarova.

Bouchard shunned any talk about winning a trophy throughout the week and kept her "match-by-match" game plan with Stephens as simple as it could be. Chan and Makarova proved to be the duo's most difficult obstacle as Bouchard and Stephens were eliminated in straight sets, 6-4 6-2. With the loss, there are no Canadians left standing at the Rogers Cup — in either Montreal or Toronto.

"It was nice winning matches, to make it to the quarterfinals in doubles, because it's an important tournament," Bouchard said. " ... and to stay in the tournament until Friday, To be the last Canadian in the Rogers Cup this year. All this is nice.

Both pairings split the first two games in the first set. Bouchard and Stephens, who held service in the third game, squandered their 40-15 lead over Chan and Makarova; as the latter rallied from the deficit to break serve.

The crucial game ended up what decided the Bouchard and Stephen's fate. While they often found themselves a point away from pulling even in games with their opponents, the duo continuously fell short.

Chan and Makarova converted on 17-of-20 first serve points en route to the first set victory, while Bouchard and Stephens won 8-of-28 return points.

The second set is often an opportunity to rid the mistakes of the prior one. Bouchard and Stephens, however, fell into a difficult situation. They quickly lost the first two games to allow Chan and Makarova to seize a two games-to-zero lead. Despite being a point away from a 3-0 deficit, the home-court favorites rallied to hold serve and were able to break the ensuing service.

Bouchard and Stephens, with momentum in their favor, fell behind 40-15 while knotted at two games apiece, and ultimately lost the game. They trended downwards in the moments after. In total, the pair won six-of-21 return points to Chan and Makarova's 15-of-27.

For Stephens, she shifts her focus to the singles' semi-final after defeating Anastajia Sevastova earlier in the day. She'll face the winner between defending champion Elina Svitolina and Elise Mertens.

Chan and Makarova advance to face No. 6-ranked Andreja Klepac and Maria Martinez Sanchez on Saturday.
