The ATP and WTA Tours make their way north to start off play in August, as the National Bank Open is underway this week.

Known by many simply as the Canadian Open, the annual event has been a staple in tennis for years. It has been around for over 140 years, making it the second-oldest continuously operational tennis tournament after Wimbledon.

The competition features men's and women's competing in either Toronto or Montreal. The two tours switch between the two Canadian cities every year since combining the event in 2011.

Here is what fans need to know about the 2023 National Bank Open, including the prize money and how to watch information.

For the 2023 National Bank Open, the ATP lists a purse of $7.623 million (USD) for the men's event, while the WTA lists a $2.788 million purse for the women's competition.

The prize money is not equal on both sides yet, but there are plans to balance out the purses for both men and women. Tennis Canada announced last month that there will be equal amounts of prize money for men's and women's tennis players starting in 2027.

"This is quite a big achievement for us trying to get an equity place for our sport in this country," Gavin Ziv said, Tennis Canada chief tournament officer.
