Monte Carlo Masters 2018: Raonic withdraws from third round due to knee injury image

Though he was able to play through the pain on Wednesday, what was hampering Milos Raonic's game became too much to continue on.

A day after advancing into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters, Milos Raonic withdrew from his match due to a knee injury that was apparently sustained during his seond-round victory.

On Wednesday, Raonic defeated wild card qualifier Marco Cecchinato in straight sets, but it wasn't without its drama. Raonic needed a tiebreak in the opening set to put away the 25-year-old Italian, and also called for a medical timeout and had the physio work on his right knee.

It wasn't the only medical issue Raonic had to play through. He also had developed a blister on his right hand, an an eye infection that forced him to pull out of the doubles section of the tournament.

It's the same knee Raonic had a meniscus issue with late in 2017 that kept him off the court. It's unclear if this latest injury has anything to do with that previous one. Raonic had begun this calendar year with a clean bill of health, something that could not be said of his 2017 season. His win on Wednesday marked the third consecutive tournament Raonic had advanced into the third round, having also reached at least the quarterfinal round in each of those events, losing to Juan Martin del Potro in both instances.
