Genie Bouchard was forced to retire due to injury during Saturday's semifinal of the Ladies' Championship Gstaad, giving top seed Alizé Cornet a berth in Sunday's final.
The two players had battled through a tiebreak in the first set, with Cornet prevailing, before Bouchard retired from the match while down 1-0 in the second set. It was a closely contested match that could've gone either way had the Canadian not been forced to pull out early, Cornet said.
"The first set was really tight. She was playing very well and very aggressive. I couldn't see that she was injured, but I'm very happy that I won the first set," Cornet, the World No 48, said. "You never know, if she had won the first set, maybe she would have kept going. She was playing amazing. I'm glad to be in the final...and I hope I can get to the trophy."
Unfortunately @geniebouchard has to retire due to injury at 6:7(5) 0:1. That means our other finalist after @mandyminella is @alizecornet! #WTAGstaad #WTA #thegirlsarebackinthealps
