How long is Bianca Andreescu out? Injury timeline, return date, latest updates on Canadian tennis star image

It's been more than 10 months since Bianca Andreescu last competed in a professional tennis match.

One year to the day of her dramatic win at the 2019 US Open, when she became the first Canadian to win a singles title, her coach Sylvain Bruneau revealed on CTV News Montreal that they "were able to start again in May and June when things were starting to open ... then she got injured again."

While he didn't reveal the exact extent of her injury, he hinted that she may not be able to play in the next Grand Slam.

"I think the French Open will be tight, we have our fingers crossed," he said regarding the tournament set to begin on Sept. 21. "We want her to be perfectly healthy, we want her to take no risk. ... We're going to make sure that when she starts a tournament, we know for sure that she's able to go from start to finish."

Back on Aug. 13, Andreescu withdrew from the 2020 US Open, posting on social media that, "unforeseen challenges, including the Covid (sic) pandemic, have compromised my ability to prepare and compete to the degree necessary to play at my highest level."

Andreescu also did not compete at the Australian Open as she continued to rehab her knee. She also sat out the Fed Cup despite being on Canada's roster and withdrew from the Qatar Total Open and Indian Wells.

"I’m not at 100 percent yet and following my team and doctor’s recommendation, I don’t want to take any risk to re-injure my knee," Andreescu said in a statement on her earlier withdrawal from Dubai, via Sportsnet. "Each day I get closer to being back to the court competing, but Dubai is just too soon."

While the 2020 season has been sporadic for the tennis world, it is quickly coming to a close. Whether Andreescu plays at all this year is, right now, an unknown commodity.

What is Bianca Andreescu's injury?

Andreescu pulled up limping during the first set of her match on Oct. 30 against then-No. 2 Karolina Pliskova at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, China. Following the 6-3 set loss, Andreescu retired from the match. The next day, she announced her withdrawal the remainder of the competition.

"My knee twisted, I heard a crack, (the trainer) validated me that it’s my meniscus. I can't bend my knee at all. It's cracking every time I walk and it friggin' hurts,” Andreescu told her coach Sylvain Bruneau during the match.

The injury suffered at the WTA Finals wasn't her first of 2019. She retired in the Round of 16 at the Miami Open in March and after the first round of the French Open in May due to a shoulder injury. She also left Wimbledon before the competition began.

How long will Bianca Andreescu be out?

Right now, the proper emoji would be the shrug.

Although Andreescu was with Canada's team at the Fed Cup qualifying tournament Feb. 7-8 against Switzerland, she was held out of the competition. She then withdrew from the tournament in Dubai saying it was "just too soon."

The teenager withdrew from the Qatar Total Open, set to begin Feb. 23, on Feb. 19. She announced on March 7 that she will not be defending her title at Indian Wells.

The tournament was eventually canceled due to coronavirus fears.

In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine on March 10, Andreescu is eyeing her return to the court at the Miami Open, which was originally set to begin on March 23.

"I'm just taking it day-by-day, doing better and better as the days go on. I'm very pleased about that. I've been doing a lot of rehab on my knee, a lot of strengthening," Andreescu said. "Right now I'm hoping to return to play the Miami Open."

Back in April, Andreescu did tell Sportsnet's Caroline Cameron, "I was off for like three [months] and I was kind of, ready to play basically right when all this started [pandemic]. So, it's kind of bad timing."

Andreescu suffered her knee injury on Oct. 30 in the first set against Karolina Pliskova at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, China. She retired after the first set and has not played since.

She officially withdrew from the Australian Open because of her knee injury by announcing her decision on Twitter on Jan. 11. Tennis Canada named Andreescu to Canada's Fed Cup roster on Jan. 28 but she did not play in the loss to Switzerland. She then withdrew from multiple tournaments before the pandemic hit. In August she withdrew from the US Open, which she won in 2019, becoming the first Canadian man or woman to win a Grand Slam singles title.

According to her coach, she got injuried again in June; however, what the injury is or how long she will be out has not been disclosed.

After feeling a "crack" during the WTA finals, Andreescu's coach told her not to push it.

"Well, I don’t need surgery, so I wouldn’t say it’s very bad," Andreescu said during her news conference after winning the Lou Marsh Award. "I can’t really say much about it. I’m just trying to rehab as much as possible and stay as positive as I can.”

At the time, her sights were still set on returning for the Australian Open — which she eventually withdrew from. She's since added the Fed Cup, the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships, Qatar Total Open and US Open to her list of absences.
