US Open 2018: Genie Bouchard advances to main draw with straight sets win in qualifying image

Genie Bouchard is officially in the US Open main draw.

On Friday, the Canadian needed just 65 minutes to dispatch of her latest opponent, American Jamie Loeb, 6-0, 6-3, to reach her sixth career US Open.

While she breezed through the first set in less than 30 minutes, in front of a standing room only crowd, Bouchard had a tougher time in the second. The Westmount, Que. native held serve to go up 4-2 and 5-3 and then broke Loeb to seal the win.

 

 

Following her play in qualifying, the formerly ranked fifth in the world - now 123rd - Bouchard is poised to make a run. Over the course of three qualifying matches, she only lost a total of seven games and played less than three hours of tennis. Bouchard is looking to advance further than her last two trips to Flushing, Queens when she was ousted in the first round both times. The 24-year-old has not advanced past the second round in any of the majors this year; she did not qualify at the French Open.

Fellow Canadian Francoise Abanda failed to qualify, as she lost to the Czech Republic's Karolina Muchova, 6-4, 6-2. On the men's side, 18-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime advances to his first-ever Grand Slam with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Austrian Gerald Melzer. Peter Polansky lost to American Donald Young, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, enters the main draw as a Lucky Loser. It marks the first time in which a player entered each Grand Slam during a season as a Lucky Loser, according to the ATP
