French Open 2019: Bianca Andreescu earns first Roland Garros win in suspended match image

Bianca Andreescu may have needed more than two days and three hours of tennis, but she finally won her first match at Roland Garros. The No. 22 seed in the 2019 French Open and the world No. 23 defeated Marie Bouzcova of the Czech Republic, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the second round.

The match, which began Monday, was suspended due to darkness. The third and final set played out Tuesday morning.

Coming off a shoulder injury that had caused her to miss match play (and clay court tune-ups) since late March, Andreescu had to shake off some rust at her first appearance in the main draw of the French Open. Despite winning, she had 60 unforced errors; Bouzcova had only 32.

"I'm not going to lie, this wasn't one of my best matches at all," she told reporters after the match. "I was getting pretty mad at myself, but it's my first tournament back after an injury, so I tried to stay as calm as possible, and I'm just really proud of how I fought through the match with the tennis I had."

The Canadian did win nine of 25 break points and had 58 winners to Bouzcova's 24. Despite dropping the first, set she battled back and is now 6-0 in 2019 when trailing after one.

Next up for the 18-year-old is American Sofia Kenin, who defeated Giulia Gatto-Monticone of Italy in three sets. Andreescu is 1-1 against Kenin; however, both matches were on hard courts. The Mississauga, Ont., phenom will now look to advance to the Round of 32 — something she has never done at a Grand Slam.
