Denis Shapovalov was upset in the second round of the Intrum Stockholm Open on Thursday.
The Canadian, seeded seventh in the tournament, was upended by the unseeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis, 6-2, 6-4.
Gulbis, who is ranked 145th in the ATP Tour, broke two of Shapovalov's serves and held all of his serves in the first set to give him the early lead.
Shapovalov. ranked 30th in the ATP Tour, was unable to break any of Gulbis' serves as the two went back-and-forth over the first eight games of the second set. But Gulbis broke Shapovalov for the third time in the match in the set's ninth game, allowing him to serve for the match.

Shapovalov also struggled with his first serve percentage. Only 47 percent of Shapovalov's first serves were in.
This was the first match between Shapovalov and Gulbis.
Gulbis moves onto the quarterfinals of the Intrum Stockholm Open where he will face fourth-seeded American Jack Sock on Friday.
