A year ago, Denis Shapovalov grabbed a nation's attention.
Shapovalov, then 143rd in the ATP rankings, faced Rafael Nadal at the 2017 installment of the Rogers Cup. The Canadian teenager pulled off the near impossible to defeat Nadal and became a fixture in the professional tennis world, not to mention the darling of Canada. Shapovalov reached the ATP's Top 25 since the momentous win. Now, Shapovalov returns to the event that propelled him into stardom this week as the Rogers Cup shifts to Toronto for the ATP Tour.

Top stars like Nadal, Juan Martin del Potro and Kevin Anderson are taking part this week, though Andy Murray already had to withdraw due to injury. Canadian Milos Raonic was also granted entry into the tournament; and, of course, defending champion Alexnader Zverev looks to defend his title as the second seed behind Nadal. World No. 2 Roger Federer also withdrew from the Rogers Cup, citing the length of the tour schedule and needing rest. Federer is a two-times Rogers Cup champion.

Defending Champion
A year ago, Alex Zverev defeated Shapovalov in the semifinals to earn the opportunity to face Roger Federer in the Rogers Cup final.
Zverev defeated Federer 6-3, 6-4 to claim the 2017 Rogers Cup championship. The hard court surface is where Zverev normally finds most success against his opponents. In 2017, Zverev earned tournament victories in four of five appearances on the surface. He could repeat at the Rogers Cup, earning ideal position ahead of the US Open.
