Spain defender Inigo Martinez has admitted that he is feeling the pressure since taking over the No.6 shirt from Andres Iniesta.

Martinez has taken the number after Iniesta retired from Spain duty following La Roja's last-16 exit from the World Cup.

The Athletic Bilbao defender says that it won't be easy to follow a player who brought a World Cup and two European Championships to his country.

"It does," Martinez told Goal when asked if the No.6 carries a lot of weight.

"For sure. Whether you want it or not, [Iniesta] has been here for many years. He has showed a level and has achieved things that few have achieved.

"I had the option to take the No.6 or other numbers, but I liked the six. I knew it weighed a lot, because Andres will always be in our memory. But I take it with desire."

Iniesta isn't the only towering figure Spain have to replace, with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique also calling time on his international career in August.

"Gerard has always given everything for the national team," Martinez said.

"He has never failed, [is] always available, he never rocked the boat.

"Pique is Pique. He was here for many years at a great level. He has decided to retire, and now good players are coming. It's up to us now to show up, and that’s why we have come."

Martinez is among a group of players who will be hoping to fill Pique's void. Spain do, however, still have another mainstay at centre-back in the form of Sergio Ramos.

"He is a leader here," Martinez said of Ramos.

"He has a personality that few have. He does it well, and not just now. But over the years, with an armband or not, he has always been a leader in the dressing room."

Spain will move into their first matches without Iniesta and Pique when they face England on Saturday and Croatia on Tuesday in the UEFA Nations League.
