Vancouver will not be a host city if the North American bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup is successful, according to Sportsnet.
The United 2026 bid committee, which represents the governing soccer bodies of Canada, Mexico and the U.S., has informed Vancouver that it is no longer being considered as a host city after it failed to meet this week's deadline, the report says.
FIFA requires a formal bid book to be submitted by Friday, with the individual cities to have solidified their intent before then. Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton have all confirmed their involvement.
The North American bid is the first to include three countries, although the U.S. would host the majority of the games should United 2026 be awarded the right to host the tournament. Morrocco is the only competing bid, with FIFA to convene in June to announce its choice.
