After a grueling and emotional penalty shootout victory over rivals Canada in the Gold Cup quarterfinals, the United States must turn the page to the next task and a semifinal date with Panama in San Diego.

The Gold Cup title defense is still on for the USMNT, despite struggling for long stretches against their northern neighbors on Sunday. Yet they will have to turn around and refocus quickly, as Panama offer stiff competition for a fringe U.S. roster.

Panama clobbered Qatar 4-0 in their quarterfinal, thanks mostly to a nine-minute hat-trick from Ismael Diaz shortly after halftime. Diaz scored his opener in the 56th minute, and by the 65th minute, he'd completed the trio and put the Arab invitees well in the rear view mirror.

Panama have reached the Gold Cup finals twice, falling to the United States both times, on penalties in 2005 and by a 1-0 score in 2013. The winner of this match would advance to the final to face the other qualifier from the Jamaica vs. Mexico match to come from Las Vegas after this game concludes.

USA vs Panama lineups

The biggest lineup question for interim manager B.J. Callaghan was the leash for Alex Zendejas, who has struggled all tournament but thus far has retained his starting spot. That changes tonight, as he sits, with Brandon Vazquez brought into the lineup, which moves Jesus Ferreira out wide. Cade Cowell has been electric off the bench on multiple occasions, and has earned a look on the left wing from the opening whistle.

Callaghan has also called upon Aaron Long for his second start of the tournament, starting him in defense in place of Jalen Neal and Matt Miazga, who have earned most of the minutes alongside Miles Robinson.

There are no players on the United States who have picked up yellow card accumulation suspensions in this tournament, and now the slate is cleared for the semis. It's unclear whether Aidan Morris, given personal leave to depart camp, has returned yet, but Jordan Morris is healthy to play after coming off the bench against Canada.

USA confirmed starting lineup (4-3-3): Turner (GK) — Reynolds, M. Robinson, Neal, D. Jones — Busio, Sands, Mihailovic — Ferreira, Vazquez, Cowell.

Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has named an unchanged lineup after Los Canaleros pummeled Qatar 4-0 in the quarterfinals.

Goalkeeper Orlando 'El Cuti' Mosquera, 28, has been the starter in goal for this tournament, given the No. 1 jersey in all four matches despite the presence of 49-cap veteran Luis Mejia on the roster.

U.S. fans will recognize Nashville SC midfielder Anibal Godoy as a mainstay for Panama, coming into the tournament on 125 caps. The defense is also extremely experienced, featuring four players with over 60 international appearances, although 24-year-old Andres Andrade (23 caps) has broken into the starting back line after completing a transfer to Austrian club LASK just over a week ago.

Panama confirmed starting lineup (3-4-3): Mosquera (GK) — Escobar, Cummings, Andrade — Barcenas, Carrasquilla, Godoy, Davis — Fajardo, Quintero, Diaz.

USA vs Panama odds

The United States are favorites in this match, given their pedigree as defending Gold Cup champions, but Panama are probably underestimated by the betting market here, as they are an impressive and experienced side which could trouble the young and inexperienced U.S. squad.

The USMNT struggled for long stretches against a fringe Canada team in the quarterfinals, and Panama will know how to exploit the weaknesses shown in that display. Given the U.S. were put through a gauntlet just days ago and will have less than 72 hours to recover, there could be multiple factors in Panama's favor in this game that lead to value in their moneyline odds which are set at over 4/1.

It's interesting that money has been coming in on Panama (from +600 to +475), according to BetMGM, though it still only represents 38 percent of the total handle for the game. The other most bet props, according to the sportsbook:

  • Anytime scorer: USA's Jesus Ferreira (59% of bets)
  • Over/Under 2.5 goals: Over 2.5 goals (82% of bets)
