Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League final on May 28. It will be the third time they meet in a final after 1981 (Liverpool 1-0 win) and 2018 (Real Madrid 3-1 victory).

The Reds knocked out Villarreal in the semifinals, 5-2 on aggregate over two legs. Liverpool scored three unanswered in the second leg after Villarreal had evened the series on aggregate.

Manchester City had a two-goal aggregate lead in Madrid with one minute left, only two watch Los Blancos erase the deficit in stoppage time and then win the series in extra time on a Karim Benzema penalty kick (6-5 on aggregate).

Liverpool and Real Madrid had a full 24 days to recover and prepare for the championship that will be played in a neutral venue. Here are all the details about the 2022 Champions League final.

Where is 2022 Champions League final?

For the third time in the tournament's history and the first since 2006, the final will be staged at the Stade de France in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis.

That decision was made on Feb. 25, 2022 after European governing body UEFA stripped Saint Petersburg, Russia of the right to host the match following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The 2022 final was originally scheduled to be held at the Krestovsky Stadium on Krestovsky Island in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The Stade de France serves as the home stadium for France's football and rugby national teams. Built and opened in advance of the 1998 FIFA men's World Cup — it hosted France's World Cup-winning victory over Brazil in the 1998 final — the Stade de France has hosted two prior Champions League finals (2000 & 2006).

In what will be seen as a good omen for Real Madrid, the Stade de France's two previous finals saw Spanish clubs hoist the trophy. Real Madrid beat fellow Spanish side Valencia in 2000, and Barcelona came from behind to best Arsenal 2-1 in 2006.

When is the 2022 Champions League final?

  • Date: Saturday, May 28
  • Time: 21:00 local / 20:00 GMT / 15:00 ET
  • Location: Saint-Denis, France (north of Paris)
  • Stadium: Stade de France

The final is scheduled to be played on May 28, at 9 p.m. local time in Saint-Denis, just north of Paris.

The Stade de France is filling in on an emergency basis after a decision by UEFA's Executive Committee to move the final out of Russia.

How to buy tickets for the 2022 Champions League final

Unlike the other stages of the competition, tickets for the Champions League final were sold and managed by UEFA. The governing body holds an official ballot to sell final tickets, with each team receiving an allocation for its supporters.

The Stade de France can house 80,000 fans, significantly greater than the Krestovsky Stadium's listed capacity of 64,468 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

UEFA also previously announced that 10,000 tickets will be given away for free to fans of the two finalists, with 5,000 going to each club.

Where is the next Champions League final?

UEFA assigned the venues for the upcoming Champions League finals back in September 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced changes to those plans.

The 2020 and 2021 final were both held in Portugal for safety reasons and that decision by UEFA forced it to reshuffle the original schedule of final hosts. Here are the sites of the next four finals as announced by the European governing body

  • 2022: Stade de France — Saint-Denis, France (replaces Saint Petersburg, Russia)
  • 2023: Ataturk Olympic Stadium — Istanbul, Turkey
  • 2024: Wembley Stadium — London, England
  • 2025: Fussball Arena Munchen (Allianz Arena) — Munich, Germany

UEFA Champions League final host cities and stadiums

Since 1955-56, there have been 28 cities across 17 different European countries which have hosted a Champions League final (or European Cup final, as the premier UEFA title was previously known).

Saint-Denis will host the final for the third time, matching the total of the only other French stadium to ever host the event: the Parc des Princes in Paris.

After the 2022 final, France (six finals) will only trail England (8), Germany (8), Spain (8), and Italy (9) for the most Champions League title matches hosted in the history of the competition.
