When can Man City win the 2023 Premier League title? Pep Guardiola nears third straight EPL crown image

Manchester City have won each of the past two Premier League titles and four of the last five, but Pep Guardiola's side have shown no signs of slowing down.

Although Arsenal topped the 2022/23 Premier League table for large stretches of the season, it's City who are now the odds-on favourites.

The 4-1 victory over Arsenal on April 26, part of a 10-match winning streak, has served to catapult City towards yet another league crown. Yet from an on-field, mathematical perspective, there is still work to be done by Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland and the rest of the City stars.

With three matches remaining of their Premier League fixture list, City are now on the cusp of hoisting yet another Premier League title.

Will Man City win the Premier League title?

Following City's victory over Arsenal on April 26, there were reinstated as strong favourites to win the Premier League title.

The Citizens lead the Gunners by four points in the Premier League table following a 3-0 beatdown of relegation-threatened Everton. Arsenal were unable to keep pace, falling at home to Brighton, meaning City are now on the cusp of the title.

City can reach a maximum of 94 points, while Arsenal can only get to 87 points, should they prevail in each of their remaining matches. That means City control their own destiny in the title race, and it means that a win over Chelsea in their next match would put them mathematically clear at the top of the table, winning the league title.

When can Man City mathematically win the title?

With three of their matches remaining, Arsenal have a maximum possible point total of 87. Thus, to secure the title, Man City need to reach 88 points (if Arsenal do not drop points).

With Man City sitting on 85 points at the moment, a combination of three points gained by Man City and dropped by Arsenal would see them win the 2022/23 Premier League title.

That means City can win the Premier League title with victory in their next match, which comes at home against Chelsea on May 21. That would see them lift the trophy regardless of Arsenal's result against Nottingham Forest the day before.

However, City would also win the title with an Arsenal loss to Nottingham Forest, or they could also secure the title if Arsenal draw with Forest and City draw or win against Chelsea. Both of those results would see Arsenal unable to eclipse City's total no matter what.

How many teams have won three straight Premier League titles?

Since the Premier League era began in 1992, only one club has won the title three times in a row and they did it twice.

Manchester United first completed the elusive hat-trick of silverware in 2001 when they beat Arsenal to the top-flight title for a third consecutive season. Then Sir Alex Ferguson guided the Red Devils to another three consecutive league titles that culminated in a 2008-09 triumph.

Teams that have won three Premier League titles in a row:

    • Manchester United (1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-01)
    • Manchester United (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09)

Before the Premier League was born, the Football League First Division boasted a rich history of successful clubs.

Huddersfield Town were the first to win three straight titles when they finished first in 1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26. After that, Arsenal also won a hat-trick of titles between 1932 and 1935 with Liverpool the next and last to complete the feat in 1984.

No club has ever managed to win four straight top-flight league titles in England.

    Man City treble chase

It's early May and the Premier League is far from the only front upon which Man City continue to challenge for silverware.

Pep Guardiola has steered his side to the final of the FA Cup, where they will meet rivals Man United on June 3 at Wembley Stadium.

Meanwhile, City are also still alive in the all-important UEFA Champions League, where they are set to meet Real Madrid in the semifinals across two legs. The first leg will be in Madrid on May 9, before returning to England for the second leg on May 17.

Should City progress to the final, they would face either Inter Milan or AC Milan on June 10 at Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
