Manchester United are scheduled to take on neighbours Wigan Athletic in the final match of the FA Cup Third Round on January 8.

The trip to DW Stadium will only be a short journey for Erik ten Hag's side as they aim to avoid an upset against a team two tiers below them in the football league pyramid.

Ten Hag reached the FA Cup final in his debut campaign at United in 2023 before losing out to arch rivals Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

Wigan vs Man United lineups, team news

Striker Josh Stones, who had found good form during a loan spell at Oldham Athletic, was out for up to three months for Wigan with a foot ligament injury sustained in December.

Forward Stephen Humphrys had been a doubt after being replaced because of a hip issue during Wigan's home win over Carlisle on December 29 but was fit to start. Midfielder Scott Smith could be out until mid-February with a calf problem he suffered in the same game.

Wigan (4-2-3-1, right to left): Tickle (GK) — Clare, Hughes, Morrison, Sessegnon — Adeeko, Shaw — Godo, Aasgard, Jones — Humphrys

Wigan subs (9): Amos (GK), Smith, Kerr, Carragher, Robinson, Wyke, McManaman, Lang, Magennis.

Andre Onana started as part of a strong United side after the goalkeeper delayed his AFCON call up with Cameroon.

Scott McTominay started, having been used off the bench in the league defeat at Nottingham Forest last time out.

Man United (4-2-3-1 right to left): Onana (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Evans, Varane, Dalot — McTominay, Mainoo — Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho — Hojlund

Wigan vs Man United prediction

The key question ahead of this game focuses on United's ability to dodge a cup shock based on their form in recent weeks.

Ten Hag's charges land in Wigan on the back of picking up just one win in their last six games in all competitions in a streak matched by their hosts.

United need a boost at the start of 2024, and an FA Cup run could do just that, and they should be able to squeeze into the next round.

Prediction: Wigan 0-1 Man United
