Germany's imperious Euro 2024 form was checked in their final Group A game and the hosts needed a late Niclas Fullkurg equaliser against Switzerland to set up their last-16 encounter with Denmark.

Julian Nagelsmann's side beat Scotland and Hungary in their first two games but faced missing out on top spot in their section until Fullkrug's heroics.

It's up for debate whether Die Mannschaft might have been better off coming second, as results elsewhere have made this a devilishly tough half of the draw. The winner of this game will be on course to face Spain in the quarterfinals.

Denmark drew all three of their games in a largely forgettable Group C. Christian Eriksen put them ahead against Slovenia, Morten Hjulmand scored a stunning long-ranger as they came from behind against England and Serbia held the Scandinavians to a goalless draw when top spot was up for grabs.

Borussia Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park has been responsible for some of the most raucous atmospheres of the tournament so far and things should be cranked up a further notch with the hosts in town.

Germany vs. Denmark lineups & team news

Niclas Fullkrug's equaliser against Switzerland was his second goal in just 76 minutes on the field at Euro 2024 and a 13th in 19 caps. There is understandably a clamour for the Borussia Dortmund star to replace Kai Havertz and start at centre-forward on his home ground.

Antonio Rudiger returned to training on Friday following a thigh complaint and is expected to remain in the first XI, which is just as well given Jonathan Tah is suspended. Nico Schlotterbeck and Waldemar Anton are the other centre-backs available to Nagelsmann.

Germany projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Neuer (GK) — Kimmich, Rudiger, Schlotterbeck, Mittelstadt — Kroos, Andrich — Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz — Fullkrug.

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand must do without his namesake Morten Hjulmand in midfield after he joined Tah in accumulating three group-stage bookings. Thomas Delaney has recovered from illness and is the most likely replacement.

A stomach bug for Christian Eriksen disrupted preparations as the experienced playmaker missed training on Friday and travelled separately to Dortmund for Friday's stadium walkaround. However, the Manchester United player is expected to be fit to start at the weekend.

Denmark projected starting lineup (3-4-1-2): Schmeichel (GK) — Andersen, Christensen, Vestergaard — Bah, Hojbjerg, Delaney, Maehle — Eriksen — Dolberg, Hojlund.

Germany vs. Denmark prediction

  • Score prediction: Germany 3-1 Denmark

Germany showed defensive vulnerability during their draw with Switzerland, something that could be compounded by Tah's absence.

However, all the evidence put forward by these two sides at the tournament so far suggests Die Mannschaft should have far too much. Roared on by the Dortmund faithful and with the added jeopardy of the knockout rounds, expect the likes of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz to find extra gears.
