Canada hope to continue their rise to CONCACAF prominence as they begin play for the 2023 Gold Cup.
John Herdman's squad reached a continental final for the first time since 2000 as they advanced to the CONCACAF Nations League title match on June 18, but fell to the United States by a 2-0 score.
While that outcome is a step in the right direction, Herdman was clearly aiming for the silverware, and the team was downtrodden to have come so close but fall short. The Gold Cup could be the stage for redemption as most top teams have submitted rosters consisting largely of backup and fringe players.
Canada's roster does not include superstar attacking players Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies, but it does still boast many of their first-team players, certainly more than the likes of the United States roster, which features almost no top names.

Group Stage
Something to note: CONCACAF, for some reason, has scheduled some group stage games for the same stadium two hours apart. That, obviously, is not humanly possible, since most soccer matches take around two hours to complete, and the next game can't just start immediately at the conclusion of the previous match.
For example, the United States is scheduled to play its second group stage game at 9:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 28, just two hours after Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET, with both games slated to play at CityPark in St. Louis. For these kickoffs, expect the second match to start at a later time than scheduled, likely around 30 minutes following the conclusion of the previous match.

Nicaragua was originally drawn into Group A, but as punishment for fielding an ineligible player, they have been disqualified from the Gold Cup. Trinidad & Tobago, as the highest-ranked team in the preliminary round, was elevated into their place, with Antigua & Barbuda, the highest-ranked non-qualifier, slid into their preliminary slot.

Canada Gold Cup roster, squad
While there are some big-name players missing from the strong squad named to the Nations League finals, many still remain on the Gold Cup roster, serving double duty this summer.
Mainstay goalkeeper Milan Borjan, who could be nearing the end of his Canada career, will hang around, although he's not guaranteed to start, with Dayne St. Clair pushing for time, and injured Maxime Crepeau lurking once his broken leg recovers.
Defenders Sam Adekugbe, Steven Vitoria, and Kamal Miller are all present, while all-important midfielder Stephen Eustaquio is also part of the roster and will play significant minutes.
Those who do not appear include stars Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies, who are released to rest and recover over the summer before reporting for club duty. David especially is in need of time off, having played 37 out of 38 league matches for Lille this season and rumored to be heading for a new club this summer.
Also not on the roster are rising defensive start Alistair Johnston, midfielders Mark-Anthony Kaye and Ismael Kone, and all-time leading scorer Cyle Larin. Atiba Hutchinson has retired from international duty with 104 caps, with the 40-year-old's last coming in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal against Panama.
