Matchday two at the Copa America opens with tournament debutants Canada meeting Peru for just the third time in history for what could be a defining match for both sides on Tuesday at Children's Mercy Park.

In their opening match, the Peruvians played out a goalless draw with Chile, while Les Rouges were comfortably dispatched 2-0 by the reigning champions Argentina.

Although they walked away empty-handed in their first match, the Canadians showed plenty of grit and had several opportunities to shock the world champions. However, the fact of the matter is that they desperately need points to stay alive in the competition.

Peru, meanwhile, were on the back foot for much of their opener, though they seldom looked to be in danger in what was otherwise a dull affair. They will look to earn a positive result here with their final match against Argentina to come after this one.

Canada vs. Peru predicted lineups, starting 11, team news

Jesse Marsch has no new injury concerns to speak of and is likely to deploy a similar starting lineup to that seen against Argentina in the opening group match.

Stars Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David will likely lead the team, with Davies playing left-back as he does for Bayern Munich and David deployed up front. His strike partner Cyle Larin failed to find the net against Argentina but garnered praise for his defensive contributions in a difficult matchup.

If Marsch is looking to switch things up, he could bring Jacob Shaffelburg into the starting lineup for Liam Millar, as the Nashville SC winger had a positive showing against Argentina off the bench.

Canada predicted (4-4-2, right to left): Crepeau (GK) — Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Davies — Buchanan, Kone, Eustaquio, Millar — David, Larin.

Injured: None.
Suspended: None.
On a yellow: Kone, Cornelius.

Peru will be without captain Luis Advincula after he suffered an Achilles injury in the opener against Chile, but they received great news that he did not tear the ligament. While he has been ruled out of the Canada match, Peru head coach Jorge Fossati said that Advincula has a good chance of proving fit to participate in the group finale against Argentina.

He will likely be replaced at left-back by Feyenoord's Marcos Lopez who has 33 caps at 24 years old and is highly thought of in the national-team camp. Lopez was a bit-part player for Feyenoord this past season but managed 12 appearances in their second-place Eredivisie finish.

Defender Alex Callens was withdrawn from the Chile match late due to injury but only had a cramp and will be fine. Legendary forward Paolo Guerrero is not longer a starter for this side, but he came off the bench against Chile and saw his team's best chance saved in the 79th minute.

Peru predicted (3-5-2, right to left): Gallese (GK) — Araujo, Zambrano, Callens — Polo, Pena, Cartagena, Quispe, Lopez — Lapadula, Flores.

Injured: Advincula (Achilles, OUT)
Suspended: None.
On a yellow: Zambrano.

Canada vs. Peru prediction

  • Score prediction: Canada 0-1 Peru

Defensive resilience and the ability to take advantage of the limited opportunities presented is key to making deep runs in these big tournaments. Peru haven't conceded a goal in four of their past five games, and it's difficult to picture their strong defense conceding against Marsch's Canada, who lack that decisive final-third quality against superior opponents.

The Peruvians may not possess as much star-power as the Canadians, but their rock-solid backline and seasoned strikers have proven they can take advantage of a sloppy mistake and exploit Canada's open defense on turnovers to win the game.
