Sam Adekugbe is headed back to Europe.

The Vancouver Whitecaps announced Tuesday that they had reached a loan agreement with Swedish side IFK Goteborg, which will see Adekugbe join the Allsvenskan club until the end of 2017.

Adekugbe, 22, spent the past year on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion in England. He made five appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls, and also played five times for the now-promoted club's U23 side.

The left back also played in two games for Canada in the CONCACAF Gold Cup earlier this month.

"Sam's year in England served him well, and he was rewarded with a call-up to the Gold Cup," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a club release. "This opportunity in Sweden will help him continue to grow as a professional football player while playing in a tough and competitive league. We'll continue to track his development."

Adekugbe has been in the Whitecaps system since joining the club's residency program in 2011. He signed his first professional contract with Vancouver in 2013.
