The U.S. women's national team's defense of their FIFA Women's World Cup title began in dramatic fashion with a 13-0 win over Thailand on Tuesday to open Group F play.

Scoring started in the 12th minute on a great endline pass from Kelley O'Hara for Alex Morgan to finish, the first of Morgan's five goals on the night.

Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan, Sam Mewis and Mallory Pugh all scored in their tournament debut, with Lavelle and Mewis scoring braces.

Carli Lloyd came on in the second half for Lavelle and scored the final goal of the night in the 87th minute.

The United States had seven different goalscorers in the contest, with 10 goals coming in the second half, a FIFA Women's World Cup record.

Speaking of records, the USWNT broke another in the match. The 13-nil scoreline is the largest margin of victory in tournament history. Morgan tied USWNT star Michelle Aker's record of five goals in a single match, scoring in the 12th, 53rd, 74th, 81st and 87th minutes.

Amid questions of the U.S.'s defense, goalkeeper Alyssa Naher recorded her first World Cup clean sheet.

The USWNT notched 40 total shots in the match to Thailand's two, putting Group F on notice that the champions will not go down easily. Groupmates Sweden defeated Chile 2-0 earlier Tuesday.
