The U.S. Men's National Team kicked off their 2024 Copa America adventure on June 23 with a routine 2-0 win against Bolivia, as the tournament hosts began their continental challenge.
But a shock 2-1 defeat to Panama in their second group outing has now left them with a huge task against Uruguay in their final match in order to progress to the knockouts.
This tournament is of huge importance to coach Gregg Berhalter and his staff, because it's one of the last times he will get to see his players in action in a competitive tournament ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which the USA is co-hosting.
With mostly friendly matches and no World Cup qualifiers, this is a crucial test for the USMNT to see how they match up with the best from the Americas, and how far they still have to go.
The USMNT last played in the Copa America when it was last in the U.S., in 2016 to celebrate Copa America's centenary. The U.S. finished in fourth place, beating Ecuador in the quarterfinals after winning Group A, but being crushed by Argentina in the semifinals. The U.S. then lost the third-place match to Colombia.
Prior to that, the U.S. had three other Copa America appearances, the best of which was a legendary fourth place finish in Uruguay with mostly amateur players in 1995, a year before MLS came into being and a year after the rag-tag USMNT bunch got out of their group at the 1994 World Cup on home soil.
