USA vs. Brazil score, result: Christian Pulisic goal leads massive USMNT turnaround in pre-Copa America friendly draw image

Following a 5-1 defeat to Colombia just days ago, the United States men had serious soul-searching to do with the 2024 Copa America a mere week away. Now, on a sticky Wednesday evening in Orlando, the vibes entering this summer's massive tournament are much, much better.

The United States improved greatly from Saturday's embarrassing defeat, submitting a strong performance against a global football superpower as they drew 1-1 with Brazil at Camping World Stadium in the final tune-up friendly before the start of the Copa America.

Rodrygo put Brazil up in the 17th minute on a bad giveaway from U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner, who has been plagued by possessional errors over the last year, but from there he locked in and emerged as the USMNT's star performer. Turner made stunning stop after stunning stop, totaling a gargantuan 11 saves by the end of the match.

Christian Pulisic leveled the score with his first international free-kick goal, skidding the ball under the wall and past Brazil goalkeeper Alisson, who himself had a fantastic 90 minutes. The Liverpool goalkeeper was on hand to keep both Pulisic and Brenden Aaronson from giving the U.S. the lead after halftime — and in truth, the U.S. should have won the match given those two huge missed opportunities.

Joe Scally, in for injured Sergino Dest, submitted a strong performance at right-back, following up his quieting of Luis Diaz by blanketing Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. across the 90 minutes. U.S. midfielders Gio Reyna and Yunus Musah were also strong, and Tim Weah made a number of things happen in the attacking half.

While the collapse against Colombia days earlier remains concerning, this performance goes a long way for the USMNT to show fans they can compete with the world's best. The biggest difference was how hard the U.S. made Brazil work for their chances, as they made life extremely difficult for their opponents, who showed signs of frustration early and often.

For Brazil, it's a disappointing result in their final Copa America tune-up, after needing a last-gasp goal to beat Mexico in their previous match. The Selecao have a lot of issues to sort out across the pitch.

The Sporting News followed the USA vs. Brazil match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened.

FULLTIME: USA 1-1 Brazil

The U.S. bounces back from a tragic 5-1 defeat to Colombia by securing a huge 1-1 draw with global superpower Brazil! It was far from a perfect 90 minutes for the United States, but the heart and desire were astronomically better, and there were numerous Americans who improved drastically.

The superstar of the match was undoubtedly Matt Turner. The U.S. should have won as both Christian Pulisic and Brenden Aaronson had enormous chances to take the lead in the second half.

What a performance, and now the Copa America is upon us!

USA vs. Brazil: Second Half

90+5 min: Chance, Brazil! Matt Turner punches away a free-kick from Andreas Pereira, and it's nearly over now! The referee allows time for the corner, which falls to Vinicius Jr. at the far post, but Matt Turner gets down to clip the ball away from the Real Madrid star! He's been immense!

90+2 min: It's all Brazil now, as the U.S. will be more than happy to get out of here with a draw. Weston McKennie throws his entire body into a block to keep a cross out, conceding a corner. The Juventus man then rises high to reject the first corner delivery, with another deflected away by Tim Ream. Vinicius Jr. has a go from distance but it's right at Matt Turner.

87th min: Chance, Brazil! MATT TURNER HAS MADE YET ANOTHER INSANE SAVE! He goes full stretch to deny another Vinicius Jr. shot! This match is being played at a frantic pace!

Five minutes of stoppage time incoming...

86th min: Chance, USA! Christian Pulisic drags a shot agonizingly wide! Everyone seemed to stop except Pulisic, who went for goal and beat Alisson but also beat the far post!

84th min: Matt Turner makes another insane save to deny Vinicius Jr., who is threaded through by Gabriel Martinelli, but it wouldn't have counted anyway as the flag went up for offside. Vinicius was definitely leaning well over the line as Martinelli played him in.

On comes Shaq Moore to replace Joe Scally for the final stage of this match. Will Vinicius Jr.'s eyes light up at that substitution?

83rd min: Chance, USA! BRENDEN AARONSON SHOULD HAVE THE LEAD BUT ALISSON MAKES ANOTHER HUGE SAVE! How has that not gone in???

Straight off a Brazil substitution with Gabriel Martinelli entering for Rodrygo, Christian Pulisic catches Brazil napping by brilliantly bringing the ball down from the air and sending it along the end line for Aaronson right on the goal mouth, but he's turned away by the Liverpool goalkeeper!

74th min: Chance, Brazil! OH MY, MATT TURNER'S DONE ONE BETTER! Minutes after Alisson produces a brilliant stop to deny Christian Pulisic, Matt Turner comes up with a stunning one-handed reflex save at the near post to palm away a cheeky flick from Rodrygo! That's absolutely sensational!

Gregg Berhalter has another two substitutes about to enter the match, with Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson set to enter. The USMNT head man said before the match that Adams still isn't fully match fit, so this is a good chance to get him on the pitch and log some time. Yunus Musah and Tim Weah depart.

68th min: Chance, USA! ALISSON WITH A SAVE OF THE YEAR TO DENY CHRISTIAN PULISIC! The U.S. star gets a square ball from Weston McKennie and has the go-ahead goal in his sights as he's glaringly open in transition, but his effort is denied by Alisson who throws himself against the momentum of his body to somehow get a hand to it! That has to be 2-1 USA, but give Alisson a TON of credit there for a remarkable against-the-grain stop!

67th min: Chance, Brazil! Matt Turner denies Endrick! The youngster gets past Tim Ream on the break, and with the Fulham man recovering, Endrick has to pull the trigger maybe a touch earlier than he wanted to, and it's too close to the goalkeeper as Turner gets down in time to cover!

65th min: Gregg Berhalter is set to make a few changes, as Gio Reyna and Ricardo Pepi are set to come off. Sounds like the two to enter will be Johnny Cardoso and Folarin Balogun. It's a negative midfield swap between Reyna and Cardoso, as Gio has had a wonderful game in possession. This is where it began to collapse against Colombia, and I'm not so sure about that one this time around...

Brazil counter by bringing on a trio of substitutes, as Andreas Pereira, Savio and teenage sensation Endrick enter the pitch. Raphinha, Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta are replaced.

59th min: Chance, Brazil! Matt Turner comes flying out to punch away a cross that ends up more like a shot! It comes from the U.S. left flank as the Nottingham Forest man turns away the chance. Then Wendell ends up with it out top of the penalty area but fires high.

The world No. 5 team is starting to turn on the jets, but the USMNT is holding firm so far.

53rd min: Chance, Brazil! RODRYGO COMES CLOSE TO A STUNNER! He nearly scores a bicycle, redirecting his body to cope with a ball that bounces behind him on the run, and with two defenders forced to just watch, he misses by a thin margin with the acrobatic effort!

51st min: The U.S. have a problem to deal with as Chris Richards is booked for fouling Rodrygo, just clipping the Brazilian star at the top of the penalty area as he looks to receive a brilliant through-ball weaved perfectly through a tight space.

The Real Madrid forward will stand over the ball to take the set-piece from about 25 yards out in a very central position.

Oh no ... the referee is going to the VAR monitor to check for a red card on review, for a potential last-man foul...

WOW, instead of a red to Chris Richards, replay shows he gets a slight touch on the ball and the referee nullifies the decision to book Chris Richards! I'll be honest, I didn't even know VAR could reverse bookings! TNT broadcast confirms that yellow cards can be rescinded upon VAR reviews, but only when the review is triggered by a review for a possible red card. The VAR official got that one all wrong on his recommendation!

50th min: Brazil have been on the front foot early in the second half, and left-back Wendell gets forward to fire a tight-angle shot on net, putting it well into the side-netting, not threatening Matt Turner's near post.

Kickoff: The teams are back out for 45 minutes with it all to play for. The USMNT collapsed hard in the second half against Colombia, will they put in a better shift after the break this time around?

Brazil have made the game's first change as the half gets underway, as Douglas Luiz comes into the midfield for the booked Joao Gomes, who was quite poor in the opening half. Gomes was booked and also gave away the free-kick which Christian Pulisic scored on.

HALFTIME: USA 1-1 Brazil

All-in-all, a much, much better USMNT performance than the Colombia match just days ago, when they trailed 2-0 at the break. There are still plenty of things to improve on, including the recognition when Brazil are going to catch their high line out of position, but overall the U.S. has done extremely well on both ends of the ball.

There has been plenty of goal mouth action to keep both goalkeepers busy, and we are only halfway through a very entertaining match. Now it's on the U.S. to keep their levels up, having completely collapsed mentally and physically in the final 30 minutes against Colombia.

Again, one of the bright spots is Joe Scally at right-back, who failed to get back in time on a few Brazil counter-attacks, including the Matt Turner save on Vinicius Jr., but he has done well overall against a Ballon d'Or frontrunner. Hard to ask for too much more than that from a man stepping in for an injured regular.

USA vs. Brazil: First Half

44th min: USMNT fans hold their collective breath as Christian Pulisic is slow to get up behind the play of a Brazil attack. Momentary concerns of a devastating muscle injury are somewhat allayed as he reaches for his left ankle, and he gets up before requiring treatment but is in some pain. Something to monitor through halftime.

Three minutes of stoppage time upcoming...

40th min: Vinicius Jr. is showing signs of frustration, as he's been stymied a few times by Joe Scally, who was one of the few quality performers against Colombia and now is putting in a good shift here. A really positive sign for the U.S. at a position of thin depth.

35th min: The game remains frantic but neither side has managed to find any more real quality chances. Brazil have come out of the cooling break in a much lower block than they were in previously, likely in an effort to keep the game from being so absolutely chaotic.

24th min: GOAL! USA! Christian Pulisic wins a foul just outside the penalty area, after being challenged from behind by Joao Gomes. There is indeed VAR tonight, and they have a long look at the replay to see if it indeed was inside the 18-yard box, but the call stands — it's very tight, so they stick with the original decision.

He stands over the free-kick and scores!! WHAT A HIT! IT'S RIPPED INTO THE BOTTOM CORNER! The wall does not do its job as it's screened by a great US wall of its own, and Alisson sees it too late to react!

22nd min: Chance, Brazil! Rodrygo is clean through on goal after a wonderfully weighted ball over the top at pace, but Matt Turner does extremely well to come off his line and challenge to prevent any kind of shot. How Turner kept Rodrygo out there, or even from shooting at all, is really impressive!

This match is end-to-end at blistering pace! Both teams are at full throttle!

21st min: Chance, Brazil! Raphinha looks to pick out the top-left corner but fires high! It comes off a good counter-attack from Brazil where they had numbers, and while it seemed to fizzle out as they advanced too slowly, nobody closed the Barcelona man down and he nearly found a brilliant finish.

20th min: Chance, USA! Tim Weah forces another save from Alisson as the Liverpool man has to drop down and to his left to keep the U.S. out of the net! The hosts are behind but moving forward well to pressure the Brazil back line.

17th min: GOAL! BRAZIL! Rodrygo opens the scoring for Brazil as Matt Turner is caught in no-man's land. It comes off a brilliant diagonal feed from Raphinha that scythes up the USMNT defense, with Chris Richards left in the dust of Rodrygo. Turner doesn't know whether to come out or stay home, and he has no chance to make the save.

It all came off a giveaway by Turner to start the move, which is becoming a worrying theme for the USMNT.

17th min: Chance, Brazil! MATT TURNER STONEWALLS VINICIUS JR! The Real Madrid superstar got free down the left as Joe Scally was caught high, but the U.S. goalkeeper makes a SENSATIONAL save coming off his line! He waited as long as he could for defenders to track back, but he comes off his line!

16th min: Chance, Brazil! Vinicius Jr. forces a save from Matt Turner, but it's a disappointing effort. The Real Madrid forward had a ton of space to shoot but was unable to find space around the U.S. netminder. That opportunity deserved a far better finish.

15th min: The U.S. players look FAR more energized and prepared to compete in this match than they did against Colombia. The hosts are swarming in the defensive half and progressing into the attacking half with vigor. It's a far better performance so far.

Gio Reyna draws the game's first yellow card, shown to Joao Gomes who is way late trying to dispossess the American midfielder as he released the ball.

12th min: Tim Weah has a hit from outside the penalty area on his left, and the effort gets good height but is right at Alisson who has little difficulty keeping that one out.

6th min: Chance, USA! Christian Pulisic forces a save from Alisson! He cuts inside onto his right at the top of the penalty area and fires a low effort that forces the Liverpool goalkeeper to the ground, although it was a relatively comfortable save in the end. A pair of early chances for the hosts!

5th min: Chance, USA! YUNUS MUSAH COMES INCHES FROM A STUNNER BUT HE IS DENIED BY THE CROSSBAR! Oh my, what a chance as he takes a rip from the top of the penalty area, but it slams the woodwork and bounces straight down and then out.

4th min: Brazil have looked to pump attacking pressure down their right flank early on, but Antonee Robinson has stood up to the early volume of defending.

Kickoff: They're underway at Camping World Stadium in Orlando! It's the final pre-Copa America tuneup for both teams before the matches all count for real!

USA vs. Brazil: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Tim Ream said after the defeat to Colombia that he saw how much the game meant to their opponents, and that he wants his USMNT teammates to feel that same desire. How much will they want it tonight, and will that carry them to the biggest result of Gregg Berhalter's coaching tenure? Or will they suffer defeat against one of the most talented teams in the world and have to head into the Copa America in poor form?

30 mins to kickoff: Gregg Berhalter wasn't thought to be under pressure heading into the 2024 Copa America. He has a contract through the end of the 2026 World Cup and has overseen a strong period of growth for the U.S. both in continental play and in the talent pool of the squad.

One place they haven't grown, however, is in results at major competitions. While the USMNT has dominated CONCACAF play since Berhalter was first hired in 2018, they have failed to take strides globally. If the U.S. doesn't reach the semifinals of the Copa America, there should be a serious inquest as to whether Berhalter is the right man for the job heading into the 2026 World Cup.

CLICK HERE to read more about what the USMNT needs to show under Berhalter at the Copa America to instill confidence that the team is indeed on a growth trajectory.

45 mins to kickoff: The start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is exactly two years from today. What steps will the USMNT take today towards their ultimate goal of a strong performance in that monumental event?

1 hour to kickoff: This Brazil squad is bursting with world-class talent, but there are two issues for the Selecao at the moment. First, and most glaring, is full-back where the only natural fits are Girona youngster Yan Couto, Porto's Wendell and Atletico Mineiro captain Guilherme Arana who hold a combined 13 international caps between the three. Danilo is versatile and can play anywhere along the back line, but figuring out the formula will be key for Dorival Junior.

Interestingly, Brazil have started Lucas Beraldo and Bremer at center-back in these two pre-Copa friendlies, with Gabriel left on the bench both times. Experimentation, or a bold choice?

The other issue for Brazil is up front, where they lack a true No. 9 striker. Tonight, it's Rodrygo in that role, where you can expect him to drop deeper sometimes as a No. 10 while Vinicius Jr. and Raphinha remain high up the pitch. Look for teenage sensation Endrick to come on at some point in the second half and cause havoc.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: The lineups have been released a bit earlier than usual. For the United States, there are just 2 changes from Colombia. Ricardo Pepi gets a chance at No. 9 for Folarin Balogun, while Yunus Musah comes in for Johnny Cardoso in midfield. Joe Scally remains at right-back after a quality performance against Luis Diaz.

For Brazil, Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, Raphinha, Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimaraes all inserted after beginning the Mexico game on the bench. It's a daunting XI for the USMNT to face off against. Endrick, however, has to wait yet another match for his first international start.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: The United States will wear its blue and red kit tonight, after deploying the whites in the 5-1 defeat to Colombia. Could this Twitter promo be a hint that Brenden Aaronson will get a chance to shine tonight?

1 hour 45 mins to kick: There is likely to be a large contingent of Fulham players on the pitch tonight as American internationals Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream face off against their club teammate Andreas Pereira of Brazil. Pereira started against Mexico and scored just five minutes into the match, a goal that marked a new chapter of Brazilian football, becoming the first player to score for the Selecao born outside of Brazil.

Still, Pereira projects as a backup for Brazil in the Copa America. A good performance today, however, could change that, but only if he's given a chance. He may not see the field, at least not from the beginning.

2 hours to kickoff: While the vast majority of USMNT players will have some soul-searching to do after the 5-1 defeat to Colombia, one player who can be proud of his performance is right-back Joe Scally, who received the opportunity to earn the right-back spot behind the injured Sergino Dest.

Scally has not been strong in his few international appearances, and he had a tough Borussia Monchengladbach season, but he faced a hefty dose of Luis Diaz last time out and stood tall to the pressure, pocketing the Liverpool star for much of the opening hour. We will see if that has earned Scally more of a look, or if Gregg Berhalter will give another player a chance to shine. We're shuddering at the thought of Shaq Moore facing off against Vinicius Jr. one-on-one...

USA vs. Brazil pre-match facts, figures

  • In 19 all-time meetings against Brazil, the USMNT has won just once and drawn none, losing the other 18. The team's lone win came in the 1998 Gold Cup semifinals by a 1-0 score with Brazil as a guest participant. Since then, the USMNT has lost 11 straight against Brazil.
  • The last player to score in four consecutive matches for Brazil was Neymar in 2021. Endrick has scored in three straight.
  • Last time out against Colombia was the first time in USMNT history that a starting lineup included all 11 players contracted to Big 5 European clubs.

USA vs. Brazil lineups, team news

A large contingent of USMNT regulars who started against Colombia will see the field again here as head coach Gregg Berhalter looks to get his players in sync. Berhalter indicated before the Colombia match that there would likely be very few changes between that game's lineup and this one, and that's the case, with just two alterations.

Joe Scally did well against Colombia in his chance to earn the right-back spot behind the injured Sergino Dest, and Berhalter sticks with him rather than give Shaq Moore or Tim Weah a chance to impress. There's no room for Haji Wright to get a chance from the off, as it would require either moving or sitting Christian Pulisic since Wright is a natural left winger. Ricardo Pepi gets a chance up front, with Folarin Balogun dropping out.

Midfield star Tyler Adams is only fit for a substitute role, Berhalter confirmed in his pre-match press conference, while Josh Sargent will not participate due to a foot injury but is "progressing well."

USA starting lineup (4-3-3): Turner (GK) — Scally, Richards, Ream, A. Robinson — McKennie, Reyna, Musah — Weah, Pepi, Pulisic.

USA subs (15): Horvath (GK), S. Johnson (GK), Carter-Vickers, M. Robinson, McKenzie, Moore, Lund, T. Tillman, Cardoso, Adams, de la Torre, Aaronson, M. Tillman, Wright, Balogun.

Brazil head coach Dorival Junior deployed a lineup of mostly second-choice players against Mexico, so sure enough, many of the regular starters to come into the XI for this game as the tournament draws closer.

That includes star forward Vinicius Jr. along with a host of other players who sat to begin the Mexico game, as did Bruno GuimaraesLucas Paqueta and Raphinha, among others. Endrick has done more than enough to earn his first career international start at the striker position after scoring in three straight games off the bench, but he remains on the outside looking in for now, with Rodrygo getting the nod up front.

As has been the case for a number of years, Brazil's weakest position is full-back. The versatile Danilo can play anywhere, but the only natural full-backs on the roster are Girona youngster Yan Couto, Porto's Wendell and Atletico Minero captain Guilherme Arana who hold a combined 13 international caps between the three. Gabriel has been left on the bench for the second straight match, with 20-year-old Lucas Beraldo given a start.

Brazil starting lineup (4-3-3): Alisson (GK) — Danilo, Marquinhos, Beraldo, Wendell — Paqueta, Gomes, Guimaraes — Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Raphinha.

Brazil subs (15): Bento (GK), Rafael (GK), Militao, Gabriel, Bremer, Arana, Couto, Ederson, Luiz, Pereira, Martinelli, Savinho, Evanilson, Pepe, Endrick.
