UEFA Women's Champions League final 2024 score, result as Barcelona beat Lyon to win historic quadruple image

Barcelona achieved a moment of football immortality on May 25 as they won the UEFA Women's Champions League final against Lyon.

The Catalans' 2-0 victory at a packed San Mames saw them defeat Lyon for the very first time, the French club having emerged as 3-1 winners to deny Barca their second consecutive European title two years ago.

The result means Barca have won every single trophy available this season, completing an historic quadruple of league, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa, and Champions League titles. They have won this trophy three times in four years. They have only lost one match in all competitions in 2023/24. For head coach Jonatan Giraldez, who is heading to NWSL side Washington Spirit, it's hard to imagine a better way to sign off.

Lineups:

Barcelona (4-3-3, right to left): 13. Cata Coll (GK) — 15. Lucy Bronze, 2. Irene Paredes, 23. Ingrid Syrstad Engen, 16. Fridolina Rolfo (22. Ona Battle) — 14. Aitana Bonmati, 21. Keira Walsh (11. Alexia Putellas), 12. Patricia Guijarro — 10. Caroline Graham Hansen, 7. Salma Paralluelo (24. Esmee Brugts), 9. Mariona Caldentey (6. Claudia Pina).

Lyon (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Christiane Endler (GK) — 12. Ellie Carpenter, 3. Wendie Renard, 21. Vanessa Gilles (27. Vicki Becho), 4. Selma Bacha — 17. Danielle van de Donk (14. Lyon are the most successful team in the competition's history but were second best in this game. It was fitting that the match was settled by the two finest footballers in this remarkable side: Aitana Bonmati, and Alexia Putellas, who came off the bench to fire home in injury time.

In a horribly tense first half, Lucy Bronze nearly gave Lyon the lead via a header that came back off her own crossbar as the French champions kept Barca at arm's length while looking a threat from set-pieces. The quality of their defending, much like their opponents' passing, was extremely high, befitting the occasion in the sparkling city of Bilbao.

Barca's breakthrough was deserved, but it came via a moment of misfortune for Lyon. Bonmati showed customary pace and poise on the ball as she drove into the box, and her cross-cum-shot deflected up off the leg of Vanessa Gilles and looped over goalkeeper Christiane Endler.

It was the latest significant moment in the career of a player who has, to all intents and purposes, done everything. Bonmati has won multiple league, domestic cup and Champions League titles since 2020. She won the World Cup in 2023 and the Nations League this year, and was named the best player in both tournaments. She won the 2023 Ballon d'Or and Best FIFA Women's Player. She was the 2023 Champions League Player of the Season, UEFA Women's Player of the Season, World Soccer and Globe Soccer best women's player in the world awards. Today, she was player of the match in the Champions League final.

She has a legitimate claim as the most decisive football player in the world. And yet, this was a final that will probably be remembered for someone else.

Putellas started this match on the bench and only appeared in second-half stoppage time, her season having been blighted by an ongoing knee issue. The build-up to this game was about her future: she signed a new contract through June 2026, a strong sign of commitment from the 30-year-old and the club where she has made history, one made in spite of concerns around whether she can reach the levels that saw her win back-to-back Ballons d'or in 2021 and 2022.

In the dying seconds, Putellas received Claudia Pina's layoff and swept home a finish into the roof of the net, sparking jubilation on the pitch and in the stands. It extended her goal record to 190 in Barca colours. It secured a triumph that will go down in history. And it reminded everyone of what she still has to offer as the captain and heartbeat of this extraordinary team.

Barcelona vs. Lyon live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime: Barcelona 2-0 Lyon

Barcelona win the UEFA Women's Champions League for the third time! They beat Lyon for the first time! They WIN THE QUADRUPLE FOR THE FIRST TIME! Extraordinary.

90+6: GOAL! ALEXIA PUTELLAS WINS IT! It's brilliant work from substitute Claudia Pina down the left. She bides her time before pulling the ball back to Putellas, who sweeps a powerful shot into the roof of the net past the helpless Endler. She's come back to win the quadruple for Barcelona!

90+4 mins: Dumornay goes to ground as Putellas sticks out a leg in the box, but she seemed to make contact with the ball. Certainly, Lyon's appeals were muted. On we go.

90+2 mins: On comes Alexia Putellas to a hero's welcome. Speaking of which — Lucy Bronze makes another brave interception with her head six yards from Barca's goal. What a game she's had. She's heading for a fifth Champions League winner's medal.

90 mins: We'll have a minimum of six minutes of added time. Can Barca hold out?

87 mins: It's all Lyon now. Irene Paredes wins two excellent headers but Graham Hansen loses the ball on the break. A long, raking cross looks destined for Hegerberg's head, but she can't find the target under pressure from Syrstad Engen.

83 mins: Attacking changes from Lyon, including the introduction of Ada Hegerberg. Can she get an equaliser?

78 mins: Coll punches Diani's cross clear and is clattered by Horan, who concedes a free-kick. Barca are angry that Diani didn't stop play while substitute Ona Battle was down. She's hurt her ankle and may have to come off.

76 mins: CLOSE! Kadidiatou Diani has been quiet today, but she tries to drag Lyon level, curling a left-footed shot from the edge of the area narrowly over.

75 mins: What a challenge, Selma Bacha! Graham Hansen once more runs at Renard, who knows she can't risk a foul. The Barca forward finds Paralluelo, receives the return pass and looks destined to score, but Bacha slides in at the last second to block. Brilliant defending.

73 mins: Renard is in the book for clattering Graham Hansen on the Barca right wing. Think that was a fair yellow card. Right now, Barca are in control.

69 mins: The official attendance is 50,827. It's a new record for a Women's UEFA Champions League final.

68 mins: Careless from Coll! Ingrid Syrstad Engen goes back to the keeper after some good defending, but the pass out is straight to a white shirt! Amel Majri can't capitalise.

66 mins: Good response from Lyon, although a spell of pressure ends with Coll collecting a low cross safely. What have the Ligue 1 champions got, here? They've never lost to Barcelona before...

63 mins: GOAL! Barcelona lead, and it's Bonmati yet again! She collects Mariona Caldentey's pass and drives into the box. The angle is tight, but her left-foot shot takes a big deflection off Vanessa Gilles and loops over Endler.

60 mins: CHANCE! Salma Paralluelo's header deflects narrowly wide after Endler was caught out by a floated cross. Lyon survive for now.

55 mins: Good play from Renard to deny Graham Hansen a run, but that move started with more good play in close quarters from Bonmati, who has started to come to life. The crowd sense a goal might be coming.

49 mins: RENARD AGAIN! The experienced defender fires over from around 12 yards out after a brilliant lay-off from Lindsey Horan. That was a centre-back's finish. At the other end, Aitana Bonmati — who's been quiet today — wins back possession from Horan, carries the ball some 40 yards, and wins a corner.

Second half: Barcelona 0-0 Lyon

Here we go! No changes to either side.

Halftime: Barcelona 0-0 Lyon

That's that for the first 45. It's been... tense.

44 mins: Just wide from Graham Hansen! Bronze's off-ball run leaves Renard not knowing where to turn as Graham Hansen charges at her, drives past her into the box, but drills a low shot wide of the left-hand post.

40 mins: Renard's header is too close to Cata Coll. Lyon continue to carry a threat, though.

33 mins: Lyon have just grown into the contest in these past few minutes. Keira Walsh is called on to stop Melchie Dumornay in her tracks, but some loose possession play sees Barca hand the ball back.

27 mins: Off the line! Lyon carelessly give the ball back to Barca on the edge of the box and Patricia Guijarro skips past a challenge to get to the byline. She cuts back and tries to squeeze a shot past Christiane Endler, who blocks with her leg, and the rebound is hooked away from the open goal.

22 mins: Barca are in control of possession but Lyon have quite comfortably kept them at arm's length. There's just a bit of frustration creeping in.

15 mins: Goodness me, Lyon nearly snatch the lead! Lucy Bronze, who earlier produced a sensational block in the six-yard box, glances on a corner that comes back off the underside of the crossbar. What a big moment early in this game.

9 mins: Brilliant play from Caroline Graham Hansen sets up Fridolina Rolfo for a half-volley at the far post, but she can't control the shot. Barca have started well.

Kickoff: First half

We're off and running in the glorious Bilbao sunshine.

10 mins before kickoff: As a reminder, this is expected to be the final match in charge for both coaches. Jonatan Giraldez is heading to NWSL side Washington Spirit, while Sonia Bompastor has been tipped to replace Emma Hayes as Chelsea head coach.

22 mins before kickoff: Arsenal star Beth Mead is here. "They're incredible teams," she tells DAZN. "I think it's going to be a very close game, but I expect Barca to score more." She's going for a 3-1 win to the Catalans.

55 mins before kickoff: And here's the Lyon XI that look to extend their historic record in this competition. They'll be up against it but cup finals elsewhere today show the pre-match odds don't always count for a lot!

1 hour before kickoff: Here are the teams. Alexia Putellas on the bench for Barcelona.

1 hour 30 mins before kickoff: Today's game takes place at San Mames, the home of Athletic Club. A capacity crowd of more than 53,000 is anticipated for this match.

2 hours before kickoff: It's the biggest game in women's club football and we'll be following every minute. Will Barcelona or Lyon stake their claim as the greatest club team in the world?
