12.10 p.m. CET: The Deputy General Secretary of UEFA, Giorgio Marchetti, is on stage and has introduced former Chelsea and England captain John Terry, who will assist the draw.
The 2011/12 Champions League winner says facing the feared Barcelona side of 2004/05 is a memory that stands out. "[Lionel] Messi was on my side of the pitch, unfortunately for me... it's just a privilege to play against those guys," he says.
Terry chooses Real Madrid as his team to watch. "Bellingham has been fantastic. Carlo Ancelotti is a great man-manager, great tactically, and they will go a long way."
Now the technical procedure is being made. Let's remind ourselves of the rules: the group winners are seeded and each will be paired with one of the runners-up, who are unseeded. Clubs from the same national association can't play each other at this stage, and nor can teams who met during the group stage.
12 p.m. CET: Host Pedro Pinto has introduced the draw and a highlights reel featuring the teams involved is being shown.
11.40 a.m. CET: Here's Porto boss Sergio Conceicao: “There is an increasing gap between European [superpowers] and teams from less financially powerful countries.
"This qualification to the Round of 16 is very important for us, even financially. We will look at the draw with peace of mind, but the goal was to be in the Round of 16. There are strong teams - very strong - but for now, we aren’t looking at anyone.”
Conceicao sounds philosophical. “I live my daily life very intensely and I have my momentary goals, such as doing a good workout tomorrow," he said. "I never think much in the mid and long-term. I've always been like this and believe things come from work, ambition and dedication.
"This is how I live and I am very happy to have been in five qualifications to the Round of 16 of the Champions League since I have been coaching Porto. We will wait for the draw, but you always need to be lucky in these moments."
11.20 a.m. CET: Leipzig manager Marco Rose says a first ever meeting with Arsenal for the club would be a "thrilling contest".
He was also asked about how he hopes to spend the festivities on Leipzig's website. "My perfect Christmas would be spending time with my family and eating well," he replied. "We’ve already had our first goose. I love red cabbage and potato dumplings. In short, everything that Christmas is all about. I like the atmosphere.
"I hope the squad stay as they are. We want to continue working on ourselves and improving as a team. We want to be critical, but still stay positive. We want to be as successful as we can be playing our brand of football and stick together as a group. If we do this, it’d be like an early Christmas present.”
11 a.m. CET: PSV are having a remarkable Eredivisie season, making it 16 wins out of 16 with a 4-0 win at AZ on Sunday.
Maybe their 10-point lead at the top is down to Peter Bosz's insistence on focus. "That is still too far away," the manager said when he was asked about the draw. "The matches in all competitions follow each other so quickly, we have to stay focused.
"I have no influence on the draw and I wouldn't know which teams we could draw.”
10.40 a.m. CET: More from Carlo Ancelotti on Real Madrid's personnel issues: "What the team has to do is exactly what it's been doing so far, with all the injuries we've had. We've done more than what anyone believed we were capable of.
"Despite the problems, this team fights, digs in, plays some great football and shows extraordinary commitment. That's the only way to fill in for all the guys who are out injured. We'll see what can be done in the coming days."
10.20 a.m. CET: Real Madrid crushed Villarreal 4-1 at home in La Liga on Sunday but there was bad news for their Austria captain, David Alaba, who ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Alaba will have surgery this week. and will undergo surgery in the coming days. "We're really sad about it," said manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has also lost goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, defender Eder Militao and midfielder Eduardo Camavinga to knee problems — a run of bad luck the veteran coach says he has never before experienced during his career.
10 a.m. CET: Asked who he wants to draw, Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri mentioned one team. “The only big club I’ve not faced yet in my career is probably Barcelona," said the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League winner with Chelsea.
He was then asked by Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia) whether Lazio could boss possession against Barca. “That might be trickier," replied Sarri. "I would love to visit Camp Nou, though.”
9.40 a.m. CET: "With Luis Enrique, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, PSG are candidates for the title with room for improvement in two months," says Mundo Deportivo, adding that Inter, as runners-up last season who beat Barcelona on Matchday 3 in 2022/23, would be "no less fierce".
"Barca face danger despite their return to the top seeding group for finishing first – something that has not happened since 2019-20."
9.20 a.m. CET: Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan are the teams for the Spanish sides involved today to avoid, says Mundo Deportivo.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid are all in the draw, giving Spain the most teams in the Round of 16. Nice for those coefficients...
