Tottenham Hotspur's new era under the leadership of Ange Postecoglou has gotten off to a losing start against West Ham at Optus Stadium.

In an entertaining pre-season friendly in Perth, the Hammers prevailed 3-2 after Spurs had fought back from two goals down only to lose to a late Gianluca Scamacca finish.

West Ham were under siege for most of the match as Postecoglou's attacking style showed signs of early promise. Yet they were unable to convert their numerous chances into goals until a three-minute burst in the second half gave them hope of a perfect start under the Australian manager.

However, it wasn't to be with two first half goals from Danny Ings and Divin Mubama, which came via set pieces, ultimately proving decisive.

Ange Postecoglou's Spurs reign starts with defeat

There was plenty to like about Spurs during their first game under the Aussie manager as they bossed just about every statistic possible.

They conjured 31 shots to West Ham's five, while they enjoyed over 70 per cent of the ball to carve out chance after chance.

At times, it appeared the game was being played solely in the Hammers' half in the second stanza such was the onslaught David Moyes' side had to absorb.

With every spurned chance or Lukasz Fabianski save, Tottenham could have been forgiven for thinking it was just not their night.

Yet they kept chipping away until they finally cracked the scoreboard through Giovani Lo Celso and then Destiny Udogie moments later.

Despite clawing their way back to level terms Postecoglou ultimately couldn't mark his first match in charge with a win.

His side's patient build-up in attack and fluid movement across the front line though would have been enough to satisfy most Spurs fans ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Hammers unbeaten at Optus Stadium

It was two games and two wins for West Ham during their tour Down Under after Moyes' side added Spurs to their earlier scalp of Perth Glory

Last Saturday, the Hammers enjoyed the freedom of the Optus Stadium pitch as they racked up a 6-2 win over the locals.

Against Tottenham they had no such joy as they were restricted to just 28 per cent of the ball and forced to produce plenty of last-ditch defending while relying on their proficiency from set pieces.

Although this type of backs-against-the-walls effort is no stranger to Moyes and West Ham were able to stay in the fight despite being wobbled before they landed the knockout blow through a textbook counterattack.

Harry Kane kept quiet

Harry Kane inevitably drew the biggest reaction from the 40-odd thousand fans in Perth who braved the rain to catch a glimpse of Tottenham and West Ham on a Tuesday night.

It was Spurs' first hit out of the season and it showed for plenty of their players, including the English international.

Kane was reduced to the occasional tidy touch to hold up play in the middle of the park, while being marshalled well by Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna during the first 45 minutes where he featured.

Postecoglou has been bombarded with questions around the striker's future ever since touching down in Australia with the noise around Kane unlikely to die down any time soon as pre-season kicks into overdrive.

Tottenham vs West Ham updates, highlights and commentary

FT: Tottenham 2 - 3 West Ham

93 mins: One last chance for Spurs who earn a free kick after Fornals commits a foul 30-odd yards out. It's chipped in towards the back post but West Ham comfortably nod it away.

90 mins: Four minutes of stoppage time.

89 mins: The chances continue to come for Spurs with Sanchez guiding a tame effort straight at the keeper before they appeal for a penalty when Davies goes down in the box. The ref waves play on.

85 mins: Chance for Richarlison who aims a header straight at Fabianski from a few yards out. Big opportunity missed.

84 mins: That sucker punch has taken the wind out of Spurs after mounting their two-goal comeback only to concede against the run of play.

Bowen trudges off after another impressive stint, while Zouma joins him on the sidelines.

78 mins: Goal! Out of nowhere! West Ham retake the lead with Fornals threading a ball through to Scamacca who makes no mistake one-on-one.

74 mins: Zouma sticks out a leg to stop a pass reaching Richarlison in the box. The Hammers are under the pump.

71 mins: Goal! When it rains it pours. Spurs have their second with Udogie flicking a near post corner past a motionless Fabianski to draw his side level in a matter of minutes.

68 mins: Goal! Perisic flashes a ball across the goal before Fabianski scurries to make a save at his near post.

The keeper is finally beaten though moments later when Lo Celso drills home from a flicked-on header.

66 mins: The rain is lashing down as West Ham absorb yet more pressure.

64 mins: Spurs still can't find a way through with Richarlison once again getting into space in the box but unable to covert.

59 mins: Richardson is being a pest leading the line and gets an appreciative clap from his manager.

The Brazilian then races through on goal but smashes his effort off the post. Not long afterwards, he is unable to keep a glancing header down.

54 mins: The raft of changes made by both sides has brought the tempo down somewhat but the story remains the same - plenty of the ball for Spurs but still no goals yet.

52 mins: Spurs have been camped on the edge of West Ham's box but have still been unable to make a chance count.

47 mins: Plenty of changes for both sides and it's Richarlison, who is on for Kane, who cuts a ball across the face of goal. It catches a deflection though from an onrushing Hammers defender and goes out for a corner.

45 mins: We're back underway!

HT: Tottenham 0 - 2 West Ham

So, over 70 per cent possession for Postecoglou's side in the opening stanza and plenty of decent chances. But they have been unable to get past Fabianski, who has thwarted them at every turn.

For the Hammers, it's two goals from two set-pieces with Bowen again looking threatening every time he gets on the ball.

45 mins: Solomon goes down in the box after driving a chance straight at Fabianski. Bowen slides in during the shot and Spurs want a penalty, but the ref is unmoved.

West Ham then spring up the other end with Vicario pulling off a brilliant diving save to his left.

41 mins: Fabianksi again denies Tottenham as Bissouma ghosts into the box and shoots low.

Kulusevski then earns a corner when his shot is blocked. Spurs go short and a goal mouth scramble ensues with Solomon snatching at it while in acres of space in the box.

38 mins: Second shaky moment from Vicario as he just about manages to find a teammate with a pass. From the resulting phase though, Solomon attempts to curl one into the top corner, but Fabianski palms it out.

Meanwhile, a round of applause goes around the ground on 38 minutes in memory of former West Ham player Dylan Tombides, who tragically lost his life to testicular cancer.

35 mins: Bowen goes down clutching his knee and the ref calls a halt to proceedings just as it seemed Kane was about to latch onto a through ball. Spurs fans not happy.

32 mins: Some nice link play down the left between Solomon and Maddison but the English international's cross is blocked. It's been a frustrating first half an hour for Spurs so far.

28 mins: Tottenham again enjoying plenty of the ball, but they haven't been able to carve out any meaningful opportunities since their two early chances which were saved by Fabianski.

25 mins: Off the kickoff, Maddison embarks on a mazy run before he's chopped down on the edge of the box. The midfielder lines it up and smacks it straight at the wall.

23 mins: Goal! Terrible moment for Vicario in goal as he is put under pressure and sprays a pass straight over the line for a corner. And it proves costly with Mubama heading home seconds later.

20 mins: Spurs respond and earn back-to-back corners, yet they come to nothing before a pass runs ahead of Kane in the box to go out for a goal kick.

18 mins: GOAL! Ings puts West Ham in front after Spurs fail to deal with the second phase of a corner. The striker nodding home from five yards out.

17 mins: Maddison sends Kulusevski through down the right with an inch perfect pass, but as he cuts in from the left to get a shot off it is blocked by a defender.

Bowen then replies for West Ham at the other end as he cuts inside and sees his shot blocked by Tanganga.

11 mins: Solomon threads a delicate ball into the box with Fabianski once again called upon to make a save from close range. Wave after wave of attack from Spurs who are being patient in possession.

9 mins: Bowen and Kane engage in a scrap for the ball with the West Ham star winning it. His side can't keep it for long though.

7 mins: The Hammers enjoy a bit of time on the ball in the centre of the park, before Kane wins his side a free kick. It's worked left and Spurs carve open the defence but a smart save by Fabianski keeps scores level.

3 mins: Early show of intent from Spurs who have penned West Ham into their own half while they enjoy all of the possession. West Ham were already 1-0 up against Perth on Saturday at this point in time.

Kickoff: We're underway!

5 mins to kick off: The warmups have been completed by both sides as we tick ever closer to kick off.
