After seeing their EFL Cup journey cut short of expectations, Tottenham hope for a better showing in this year's FA Cup as they meet fellow Premier League side Burnley in the third round of the competition.

Spurs fell to Fulham on penalties way back in the second round of the EFL Cup in late August, and with no European play this season, Ange Postecoglou has been forced to focus solely on the league.

The FA Cup could provide Spurs with a few more fixtures, and it will be interesting to see how Postecoglou plays this match from a squad perspective. The Australian coach was criticized deeply for his approach to the EFL Cup match, deploying a host of second-choice players who faltered amidst the early exit.

Burnley, meanwhile, hopes an upset of their own could foreshadow an uptick in form at the league level, as they sit in the relegation zone and would hang their hat on any boost of confidence this match could provide.

Tottenham vs Burnley prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Tottenham (-210)
  • Score prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Burnley

Ange Postecoglou will have learned his lesson from the EFL Cup disappointment back in August. With only the league to focus on this season, he should have the capacity to play his first-teamers in this match, who should be capable of brushing their relegation-threatened opponents aside.

There are some injuries for Spurs to work around, with James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero all sidelined, but they'll have plenty of firepower left to take the field.

Burnley, meanwhile, must look ahead to more important fixtures, including a massive relegation six-pointer against Luton Town in 10 days, plus a brutal stretch following the winter break as Man City, Liverpool, and Arsenal all sit on the upcoming fixture list through February.

Tottenham vs Burnley: best bet

  • Pick: Giovani Lo Celso to score or assist a goal
  • Odds: +145 (FanDuel)

Tottenham should have plenty of chances in this match given Burnley's struggles defensively, and Argentine midfielder Gio Lo Celso will surely be at the forefront of their push forward. With James Maddison out injured, Lo Celso has overcome his own fitness issues to prove vital during this stretch for Spurs.

Last time out against Bournemouth, Lo Celso made just his second start of the season and was brilliant, winning an astronomical 11 of 14 ground duels as he took on opponents at will. He saw both his key passes turned to goals, and roasted the Cherries for the entirety of his 82 minutes on the field.

With Spurs missing its main No. 10 in Maddison, and just one fixture remaining between now and January 31, there's no reason for Ange Postecoglou not to send Lo Celso back out for a reprisal, and he should deliver the goods.

Tottenham vs Burnley prop bet

  • Pick: Jay Rodriguez anytime goalscorer
  • Odds: +350 (DraftKings)

Tottenham and clean sheets mix like oil and water, they just don't go together. While 34-year-old Jay Rodriguez may not be fit enough for a regular starting role at Burnley, this match could be a good opportunity for him to get a run in the side, especially with first-choice striker Lyle Foster slumping up front.

Foster scored in the latest defeat to Aston Villa but overall has provided little in the way of chances up front. Rodriguez, meanwhile, has the opposite problem — he's been heavily involved when on the pitch but has struggled to finish. The latter will please Sean Dyche more, knowing that Rodriguez has the quality to turn around his misses in front of net.

Rodriguez has failed to find the net in his last three starts but collected 1.53 expected goals on five shots in that span. He should manage to put in a good shift here if given the chance, but be sure the veteran frontman is given the start before logging this play.
