Michael Bradley isn't going anywhere.
Bradley has re-signed with Toronto FC in a deal that will be officially announced on Thursday, according to multiple reports. The 32-year-old midfielder just completed the final season of a six-year, $39 million contract and is expected to take a major pay cut to remain in Southern Ontario.
An American national team stalwart who left Italian club AS Roma for TFC in a $10 million transfer ahead of the 2014 season, Bradley earned $6.5 million in 2019 according to the MLS Players Association. His deal reportedly included a one-year option that would've automatically kicked in at the same salary if TFC had won the 2019 MLS Cup, but the Reds were defeated 3-1 in the final by the Seattle Sounders.
With Bradley as a free agent, the club has seemingly inked its captain to a contract that frees up a Designated Player (DP) spot. MLS clubs are allowed to have up to three DPs at a time, with such players not counting against the salary cap. TFC had three DPs on the books in 2019 — Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Alejandro Pozuelo — and is expected to pursue a high-priced attacker ahead of the club's Feb. 29, 2020 season kick-off.
Since arriving in Toronto, Bradley has made 200 appearances for the Reds. During that time, the club won the 2017 MLS Cup, 2017 Supporters' Shield and three Canadian Championships. In addition, TFC was the runner-up in the 2016 and 2019 MLS Cup finals and finished second in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League.
Prior to Bradley's time with TFC, the team had never played in the postseason.
