The Copa America will have an expanded tournament in 2024, in which 16 teams (10 from CONMEBOL and the six best from CONCACAF) will battle to lift one of the most coveted trophies in the game.
Divided into four groups of four teams each, only the two best from each pool will qualify for the knockout phase.
But how does qualification work in the event of a tie in the standings, and what tiebreaker will be used? The Sporting News has all the details on the criteria used to decide the groups.

How Copa America 2024 groups are decided in the event of a tie
In the event that two or more teams finish with the same number of points in the group stage of the Copa America 2024, CONMEBOL, according the competition regulations, has several criteria to establish the tiebreaker:
1. The tied team with the greater goal difference in all of the group matches. Goal difference is calculated by subtracting the goals conceded from the goals scored.
2. The tied team with the greater number of goals scored in all the group matches.
3. Head-to-head record between the tied teams, considering only those matches played in the group stage between the teams level on points and the above goal difference/goal scored criteria. This tiebreaker to be defined according to the following order:
- Greater number of points obtained in the group-stage matches between the teams in question
- Greater goal difference in group-stage matches between the teams in question. The goal difference is calculated by subtracting the goals conceded from the goals scored.
- Greater number of goals scored in the group-stage matches between the teams in question.
4. Fewer red cards.
5. Fewer yellow cards.
6. By the drawing of lots.
