Brighton & Hove Albion forward Percy Tau made his Premier League debut against Manchester City on Wednesday.

The South Africa star joined Leandro Trossard and Alexis Mac Allister to complete the Seagulls' attacking force and he saw 68 minutes of action before he was replaced by Neal Maupay.

Phil Foden's 44th-minute strike separated both teams at the Etihad Stadium as the hosts secured maximum points.

Tau was yet to play in the English top-flight since his switch from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018 because he had spent the last two-and-a-half years on loan in Belgium.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old was introduced as a second-half substitute as Brighton defeated League Two club Newport County on penalties in the FA Cup.

Wednesday's loss stretched Brighton's winless streak to nine Premier League matches since their 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on November 21.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez was another African star who was on parade for Manchester City before he was replaced by Gabriel Jesus in the 67th minute.

However, Mali's Yves Bissouma was suspended for the encounter after he received his fifth yellow card of the season earlier this year against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Brighton and Hove Albion remain 17th in the Premier League table with 14 points 18 games while Manchester City climbed to third with 32 points from 16 matches.

Tau will be looking to help Seagulls end their winless run when they visit Leeds United for their next league fixture on Saturday.
