The 2021/22 League One playoff final gives Sunderland a shot at a Championship return after four seasons in the third tier and Wycombe Wanderers the chance to bounce back immediately following their relegation in 2020/21.

Sunderland finished fifth at the end of the regular season, a point ahead of Wycombe as part of a 13-game run without defeat to end the campaign.

That unbeaten sequence has continued in the playoffs, in which Sunderland beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in the first leg of the semifinals before going through 2-1 on aggregate courtesy of a last-gasp Patrick Roberts strike in the return game in Yorkshire.

Wycombe also showed their spirit to scrape through to the final with a 2-1 aggregate win, surviving a 1-0 second-leg defeat at MK Dons, who had finished three places and six points above them in the table.

Sunderland vs. Wycombe Wanderers predicted lineups

Alex Neil has reported an almost clean bill of health among his squad for the first time since he was appointed Sunderland manager in February.

Midfielder Carl Winchester has returned to training following a groin issue, on-loan Union Berlin forward Leon Dajaku has recovered from illness and forward Nathan Broadhead, borrowed from Everton, came back from injury in the dramatic semifinal second leg at Sheffield Wednesday.

Sunderland predicted lineup (3-4-1-2): Patterson (GK) — Wright, Batth, Cirkin — Gooch, O'Nien, Evans, Clarke — Pritchard — Roberts, Stewart

Colourful Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has said he has no new injury worries and described his squad as raring to go ahead of the final.

Club legend Adebayo Akinfenwa, who turned 40 on May 10 and scored a 100th-minute penalty for AFC Wimbledon in the 2016 League Two playoff final at Wembley, could make his final appearance for the Chairboys.

Wycombe Wanderers predicted lineup (3-5-2): Stockdale (GK) — Jacobson, Gape, Stewart, Tafazolli — Vokes, McCleary — Horgan, Obita, McCarthy — Scowen

Sunderland vs. Wycombe Wanderers betting odds

Sunderland's short odds reflect their long unbeaten run and status as one of League One's best-resourced clubs, backed by average home crowds of more than 30,000.

A former Premier League manager after guiding Norwich City up through the Championship playoffs, Neil has not tasted defeat as boss since Sunderland lost his first home game in charge.

Wycombe's odds could be seen as long in light of their own 13-match unbeaten sequence before that defeat at MK Dons, which they were entitled to celebrate as a victory after a gritty display of defending against a team who had been free-scoring at home.
