A run of one win in 12 games at the end of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign meant Southampton fans were perhaps the most relieved of any set of supporters to reach the end of the season.

In a slog only redeemed by the poor form of the teams below them, Saints finished 15th for a second successive year, winning just nine of their 38 games.

With the pressure on manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, Southampton will be hoping to end their inertia in 2022/23 and aim higher than bobbing just above the relegation scrap.

What's the schedule at St Mary's Stadium? Where will Southampton be heading in search of a brighter campaign this time around? Here's how the season looks.

Southampton in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup

Southampton drew twice against eventual champions Manchester City in the Premier League but could not repeat the trick in the FA Cup, losing 4-1 at home to Pep Guardiola's side in the quarterfinals. They return to the competition in January.

A creditable 1-1 draw at Chelsea culminated in a 4-3 defeat on penalties in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, which starts again for Southampton in November.

Southampton Premier League betting odds

Only Watford and Norwich City, who were both relegated, fared worse than Southampton in the final 10 games of the 2021/22 season, and bookmakers price Hasenhuttl's side at long odds to look beyond the lower reaches of the table again.

That run included four successive defeats to end a season in which goals were a major issue for the club, with only inspirational midfielder James Ward-Prowse reaching double figures, providing 11 goals and eight assists. Southampton ended as close to the relegation zone as they did to Aston Villa immediately above them, suggesting that a top-half finish would represent significant progress in 2022/23.

Southampton best & worst Premier League finish

Part of the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/93, Southampton only finished higher than 10th for the first time by securing eighth place in 2002/03, although they were relegated to the second tier when they came bottom two seasons later.

Their best seasons came after their return to the Premier League in 2012/13. Ronald Koeman led them to their pinnacle of sixth in 2015/16, having earned seventh the previous year.
